Hey guys, it’s been windy and cloudy recently and I’ve been experimenting with a spinnerbait a lot lately.. I was curious if anyone ever runs no skirt with just a swimbait on the back. Also I was curious how this differs from a underspin.. if anyone had any comment on this please let me know thanks!

Experimenting is good, it's how bass fishing has evolved.

I prefer the skirt simply because it slows the bait, more buoyancy but always a trailer like a curly tail, my preference.

Have a good friend who throws skirtless with Zoom flukes and sends me pics.....there you go.

Spinnerbaits are very proven and believe the spinning blades and flash are the major players here.

Wish you great success.

Yeah I second the bird man.  I have a 3/16th's spinnerbait I add bulk to with a twin tail grub.  It's my all time favorite bait for smallies.  I can slow roll it or burn it or just reel and jerk it.  Ha makes me want to go thinking about it.

I've tried a spinnerbait with no skirt but like @Bird said the skirt adds buoyancy and volume that I like. It helps slow the fall when I drop it. This differs alot from an under spin mainly because the profile of a spinner bait is much bigger...an under spin is much more subtle. So for me it would go like this stained water to moderate clarity or low light=spinner bait...slightly cleaner water or bright conditions=swim jigs....extremely clean water, cold water or high pressure (both fishing pressure or barometric like bluebird skies)= under spin or plain jighead.

Welcome to BR.

I’ll address the spinnerbait/under spin. Aside from the obvious difference in blade placement, the big difference is the profile and what each  one  imitates./ The under spin a single baitfish and the spinnerbait multiple ones.  The spinnerbait, IMO, is more versatile as it can elicit both reaction and feeding bites and can be worked through and around cover much easier. The under spin is presented more in open water and hard bottom situations.

Yes, I have.  It wasn't nearly as effective as with a skirt.  I often thin the skirt by about 1/3.  I find a spinnerbait to come through vegetation and rocks far, far better than either an underspin or bladed jig.

I wouldn’t doubt that a spinnerbait would work without a skirt, trailer or any soft plastic attached.

Want proof?

Look at an inline spinner with no hook dressing. It’s nothing more than a wire, a weight, a spinner blade and a hook.

More?

Zell Rowland used to remove the skirt on Buzzbaits and fish them naked. Not a spinnerbait but darn close to it.

Yes, use any soft plastic you want. One word of caution: be careful of the weight of the plastic you’re using. A spinnerbait’s sweet spot for blade and weight ratio is a small window before it’s over torqued - runs on it’s side. ?

Long before anyone heard of Keitech or any of these little swimbaits H&H out of Baton Rouge was making Cocahoe Minnows.

Jerk the skirt of the Vibratron, throw a Cocahoe on there & kick bass!

Windy, or cloudy, or stained to dirty water is where I go to a spinnerbait.

Never had much success with them in clear water and high skies.

Underspins work great for me in clear water and in sunny skies.

Shhhhh. I just brought back a bunch from Gulfport. The newer ones are softer and have a bit more action the the originals, but they are a great bait, both the standard and the queen.

No intention of hijacking this thread, but I just picked up a picasso double willow spinnerbait and I didn't notice till i got it that it has a swing head design.  Seems genius for action, hook up ratio, and the removal of a jumping bass's leverage during the fight.  Haven't gotten a "real" spinnerbait in awhile, this design been around?  Does it do, what I think it's gonna do?

These freshwater guys are learning what we've thrown in marshes for years.

My dads got boxes of cocahoe minnows still from when we lived on the Texas coast when I was a kid.

Navy put us up in a beach front condo (ok, technically we had to cross 90 and dodge the pickups with MAGA flags) but close enough, and a cocahoe with and without spinner is all I used to catch reds, trout, spanish and ladyfish out front, flounder in the marsh, and bass on base.

Good design for open water and light cover, not so much if you are throwing it through stuff and going after them. The hook riding rigidly under the upper arm makes it less prone to snag. Am I the only one that throws a SB with no blades? Is it still a spinnerbait or a weedless swimjig at that point, or a hybrid?  and do we need a technique name for it?

I buy mine at the Stop and Shop/Exxon on the beach road in Kill Devil Hills. That's the first village north of Nags Head NC. Not only do they have tackle and stuff, they have flip flops, clothes, a deli, a grocery, beer, hermit crabs, incense, and free air (very important at the beach).

We're headed that way tomorrow on our way to Ocracoke. Maybe I'll get a deli sandwich and enjoy the view across the street. And buy some tackle of course.
