My brother in law has a decent lure retriever where you can put the line on the end of it and it follows it down to the end where the lure is. Plastic wing looking thing on the end of the poll. Seems to work well.  It extends to about 8’ I think.

Is that the best kind or are there any others that work well?

I am looking to get my own shortly.

Thanks.

I have a bass pro brand similar to this. it works good in deeper water.

I use the frabil 9865 more. it works great if you launch a bait into the trees. it will extend to 15 feet.

Made a homemade one 30 sum odd years ago out of a 1/0 or 2/0 brass snap swivel, 2 old spark plugs, a length of 1/8 braid cord and short piece of a broom handle. Saved me a fortune in crankbaits.

I’m guessin on snap swivel size but needs to be big enough that the gaps on old spark plugs can be put on snap end of the swivel and the gap closed. Tie on cord to the other end and to the broom handle in case it goes over board. Put snap on line and let er go, most of the time baits comes loose right off.

Thanks everyone.  I may go with both types.

Although I get snagged under the water I do on occasion hit the trees a few times being over zealous.  Hopefully my new gear I got this year will help in that department a bit.  Finally went with a better rod and reel.   St. Croix Avid x and Vanford will likely give me some more accuracy.  Probably should cast in the middle of the water first to check the new distance :-).  Can't wait to get out on the water.

The cheapest pole kind I saw was $36, so not terrible compared to the ones around $50.

Just don't cast into the trees!

I have a telescopic light bulb changer I use for the bird Fisherman that sometimes fish with me.

I have a Timmy Horton money pole as well as a model attached to a short section of an old bait caster and spooled with 120 lb. braid.

I have the Frabil pole and it’s great. Have yet to not get a lure back. I paid $35 or so for it. I had one of the knocker types but it was a pain to use and I could rarely get it to work. However I’m not sure I ever knew exactly how it worked but trying to yo-yo a string while holding my rod as the wind carried me away was a pain in the butt. The pole is a lot easier to use

I also use this too.  I have also used this alongside a telescoping tree pruner.

Just be careful which neighbor's trees you trim.  (Joking).

One lady I ran into in a public waterway wasn't too pleased to see me snipping out a nice one knocker spook that I couldn't bear to part with.

When I explained "the hazards posed by these things that some careless angler had tossed into the trees to rare species of birds" her whole demeanor changed and I thought she was going to hire me to do more pruning.

Anyway don't cast lures into trees above water.

I bought the Frabill pole last fall and it’s undefeated so far and has more than paid for itself. I never could get consistent results out of the string knockers but still carry one in case I’m too deep for the pole. The pole extends to around 15ft I think and collapses to the size of a rod. I just keep it in the rod box when not using.

I carry both styles - the extendable pole and the hound dog type lure retriever.     The hound dog type lure retriever is attached to a retractable 50' dog leash.   That is deep enough to get to any bait that I might lose and it stores in a compact package.
