Super User Koz Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 OK - so how superstitious are you? I bring this up because tonight I landed a bass on my first cast and then for the rest of the 45 minutes I was out there I didn't even sniff a strike. 1 Quote
Michigander Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 I believe. And I always make a quick ultra low percentage cast to shake it off on each trip. ? 3 2 Quote
KCFinesse Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 Hank Parker-ism- You can't catch a fish on everything cast unless you catch one on the first cast. 8 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 If I catch a bass on my first cast, I throw all the bananas overboard and go home... 1 6 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 I don't have any superstitions about fishing. 1 Quote
newriverfisherman1953 Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 I’d rather catch one on the first cast than not catch any at all. Nope. I say it’s good luck when you catch one. No matter which cast. 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 I fish very small ponds that I know quite well so it's not uncommon for me to catch one first cast. It is uncommon for me to catch only 1 bass... A skunk us more common for me than a single fish. So no I don't believe its a jinx. 2 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 No jinx. If you catch a fish first cast, you feel so eager that your natural tendency is to speed up on the next cast. That doesn't work. Rule of thumb: if you catch a fish on the first cast, slow the next retrieve down to what seems like half speed. Then you'll actually be about where you had been the first time. jj 3 Quote

So even though the rest of the day was slow I didn’t care. My vote is no. 9 Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 6, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 6, 2021 I’ve had many excellent days after catching one on the first cast. I’ve also had days where I didn’t catch fish on any cast, so I gladly welcome first cast fish 5 Quote

ironbjorn Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 The first cast catch "jinx" isn't anymore real than the universe caring that you have your lucky underwear on to determine your sports teams success (as if you're the one guy in the world who dictates this and, of all things, based on a clothing option). It's not real. At all. 4 1 Quote
Jaderose Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 My first cast on my little lake is always to a high percentage brush pile that's off shore maybe 80 yards so it's quite likely my first cast will net a fish. Along with my 2nd, 3rd, etc. So no....I expect a fish on my first cast. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 No , but it has happened . 1 1 Quote
5/0 Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 No. It gets the adrenaline flowing and stokes anticipation for the rest of the day. I’ve had days when it’s been good and others where things went south badly. It’s just how things are sometimes. Quote

First one on and last one off the ice for games, and never, ever, let my goalie sticks cross in the locker room or on the bench. And the lucky underwear thing. And the lucky t-shirt thing. I was pretty ripe under all that gear! 2 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 NO. But I did catch a fish on my first cast with a whopper plopper. I have never caught another one on it so...? 1 2 Quote

Super User Bird Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 No. My most memorable 1st cast catch was sitting in my kayak waiting for my cousin to launch his boat in the river. Simply slung a spinnerbait in middle of the river and WHAM.....4# smallmouth. Cousin just laughed and said " well, doubt you top that today " and I didn't. Quote
newriverfisherman1953 Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 One thing I’ve never done is catch one on my last cast!! 2 4 Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I don't believe in any jinxes or things of that nature. The fish do not know if you caught a fish on your first cast. They don't know if you have a banana in the boat or if you are wearing your lucky hat. It's all in your head and it's kinda foolish. 4 1 Quote
