Quarry Man Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 Looking to buy a reel for skipping jigs. Going to be an Daiwa SV reel rod is a 6'10" H Champion XP Dock Skipping rod. Will have 17 lb invisx or tatsu. WIll mainly throw 3/8 oz skipping jigs on this rod. I have heard a lot of people still really like the 17 version. I have a few tatulas, zillions, and the new tatula elite reel. What do you think? I know I have heard people talk about this briefly on here, but I was unable to find a set thread. Quote
GReb Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 I’ve owned the 17 for several years and bought the 20 when it came out. I prefer the 20 although unless I found a good deal I’d probably just jump up to the Elite. I love the Elite. The new Curado 70 mgl would also have my eye Quote

How do the two reels compare for skipping? Quote
onenutinthewater Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 I have the 17 & 20 sv along with the Elite- Love them all but the 17 definitely feels a bit geary compared to the others but it does have quite a few salmon & steelhead on it Quote

TcRoc Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 If you go for the 17 check ebay.. had some offers sent to me in last couple day for a nice price since I was watching there item. I am in the market and don't know if I want another Sv or go with the Elite pitch and flip. My Sv is a '20. Quote
waymont Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 Either the 17 or 20, both are excellent skipping reels Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 I have all 3 of these reels and they are all great reels.... I have skipped docks with the 17 and the 20 and they are both great for this technique. Never tried my Elite for this technique but I would think it would perform just as well.... Quote
Dens228 Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 I skip with the Elite. I love the SV TW's also but think it's worth the few extra $$'s for the Elite. Quote

But mine was and still is as smooth as butter. He sold all his SV’s because of that experience. Quote
txchaser Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 The geary thing is reel specific. I know better now, if it isn't butter smooth just ship it back, not worth fiddling with. On 17 vs 20, I have five or so of each. Practically they are entirely interchangeable to me. If I get more it'll probably be the 20's since the smaller form factor is a win, but nothing is better enough for me to go through selling the 17's and replacing them. I thought I was going to quickly drop the 17's when I first felt the 20. One exception though - on bottom contact they are elites or 2020's, but that's mostly an accidental outcome, and when I'm trying to get my finger on the line it is a little easier with the 100 platform because it is smaller. 1 1 Quote

waymont Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I have seven 2017 Tatula SV, all are as smooth as day one. Like all new reels I get, I take them apart, clean them, and re-grease/oil them. I do regular maintenance, and have never had one problem with them. I also have two 2020 versions, and have the same experience. Excellent reels. Anytime any of my reels feel sluggish, either casting or retrieving, they get attention. Quote
