billmac Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 So now we have Livescope, Down Imaging and Side Imaging. What do you think is next? Now that you can literally see the fish and your bait as it moves through the water, what is the next big thing, besides just incremental improvements to these technologies? The only thing I can think of an infallible way of distinguishing species. What do you think? Quote

jrfuda Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 "Stereo" version of live imaging. Two emitters instead of one plus heavier processing in the black box that produces a true 3D image of what you're pointed at, you'll be able to see distance, depth, azimuth, shape, size, etc of everything. If they increase the field of view enough, you could have this 3D image all around you instead of just what you're pointed at. I imagine setup would be somewhat complex to ensure they're on the same plane and you'd have to input how far apart they are from each other during setup (or they'd ping each other and figure it out with software). Also multiplexing so the emitters can sweep through their entire range of frequencies hundreds of times per seconds so you can get the benefits of whatever each frequency offers, again processed by a much more robust chart or blackbox that results in a composite image that requires almost no interpretation... or are they already doing this on some scale? billmac Posted March 6, 2021 Author Posted March 6, 2021 I watched a video that suggested that a lot of fishermen with Livescope were losing the ability to locate fish, other than simply driving around until they saw them on the livescope. Frankly I don't know what to think. It is unlikely that I'll ever be able to afford livescope (although I wouldn't mind side imaging). But I'm just wondering if we will ever get to the point where locating fish is so easy (yes, I know you still have to catch them) that tournaments will finally say enough is enough. I doubt it. Quote

Super User MickD Posted March 6, 2021 Super User Posted March 6, 2021 Next thing will be alerts linked to the "live" features that show swimming fish. Will alert us to the presence of fish and show with 360 or similar where they are. Quote

That could be a possibility. If all you have ever known was how to use the live scope or the other really hi-end stuff. You don’t have the ability to just look at a map and say “ that looks good I’ll try there”. Or aimlessly casted for hours untill you found fish electronics or other high end gear won’t make a bad to average fishermen good. However, it will help make a very good fishermen to an excellent fishermen or excellent to a pro. Just because, you have all the high end stuff doesn't mean it lets you skip all the steps in between bad and excellent. We all started at bad/beginner and worked hard to get where we are currently. billmac Posted March 7, 2021 Author Posted March 7, 2021 It is interesting that something like Livescope is OK but the A-rig is banned in tournament fishing. Don't want to give anyone an unfair advantage! 1 Quote

Maybe at some point we will need to be more strict with our definition of the word "fishing". To me, the biggest aspect of fishing is locating the fish. If you have a computer do it for you then what are you really doing? Winning money maybe, but that ain't fishing, not in my book. If someone else or a computer is telling me exactly where to cast, well I'm nothing more than a computer peripheral holding a stick. Plug me into the USB port, we're going fishing! You could automate the entire thing...casting, hook set. It would not be difficult. One reason I fish is to "get away from it all", not bring it all with me! Geez I'd feel like I'm at work with all that computer crap in my boat. Quote

Agreed: We might just call it "catching". I just saw an ad for Humminbird MegaImaging that will tell you the species and direction of fish out to 200 feet. "No more guesswork" was one of the phrases. I'm not saying I'm absolutely against this stuff, but I'm uneasy about the direction it's going. How long before someone discovers a frequency that throws fish into a feeding frenzy? Quote
