okinawa17 Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 Hi Everyone ! I just joined this great community and after reading some super interesting discussions on such a variety of topics I thought of a good first question to ask ! I purchased a used Wilderness Systems Pamlico Excel tandem kayak on Craigslist in 2014. Two weeks ago I purchased a used Minn Kota Endura Pro 55 lb thrust trolling motor, also on Craigslist. I live in NY and I've learned that I need to register my kayak if I want to use the trolling motor. Today I called the DMV and they told me that I need to show proof of ownership of the kayak and the trolling motor with a Bill of Sale or sales receipt, etc. Once I have that I can go online and fill out a title form and a registration form. I have email records from 2014 with the Craigslist seller where we agree on a price for the kayak, date to pick it up, sellers address. I can furnish the same for the trolling motor. My question is I can't sign for the seller, nor do I know their full names (it's Craigslist after all!). Any one have any advice for me as to how I can put together a sales receipt for and get my kayak and motor titled and registered ? Thanks everyone - any questions let me know ! Joe P.S. also called Wilderness Systems today and they said if I give them the hull identification number they can mail me the kayaks manufacture origin (or something like that). Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted March 4, 2021 Super User Posted March 4, 2021 E-Mail the seller and have them fill out a Bill of Sale and mail it to you. Quote
okinawa17 Posted March 4, 2021 Author Posted March 4, 2021 Thanks MN Fisher, I can definitely do that for the trolling motor I bought since its only been two weeks since I bought it and I have the seller's cell phone but with the kayak i went back and forth with him via email but I was emailing the seller's Craigslist auto generated email address (which then goes to the seller's personal email address without the buyer (in this case me) seeing). I will try to email him using the Craigslist email address tomorrow to see what happens. Thanks ! Joe Quote

If you can't get hold of the original seller - then Wilderness Systems can send you a 'Certificate of Origin'...that's what you need. Though you might be paying registration based on it being new rather than used...so a bit more for the first registration. Quote

Joe I don't know the laws in NY, and I don't doubt you as I live in IL which is more corrupt than your state. NY considers an electrically propelled kayak as a motorized boat? Quote
okinawa17 Posted March 4, 2021 Author Posted March 4, 2021 I wish i was wrong but... Boat registration requirements In New York, boats (watercraft) without a motor do not need to be registered. If you use a motor (electric or fuel-driven), regardless of the size of your boat or the motor, you must register your boat. Quote

NY considers an electrically propelled kayak as a motorized boat? They do in TN as well. Anything with a motor needs a sticker, electric or gas Quote

GTN-NY Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 I’m in NY and bought my used kayak a couple years ago. Last fall I put a trolling motor on it. Filled out the paperwork, sent it in and they called looking for photos of the hull I’d #. Did that then they wanted a Bill of sale or manufactures certificate of origin. I called the dealer and they emailed it right over. Easy enough to do 1 Quote

Super User slonezp Posted March 4, 2021 Super User Posted March 4, 2021 I just looked up Illinois. I was under the assumption that canoes and kayaks didn't need to be registered regardless of being motorized or not. I was wrong. 2 Quote
