CTBrahan Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 I am currently looking at buying a casting rod for spinnerbaits. Right now I am considering these three rods for spinnerbaits: -IMX Pro 844 MBR -E6X 844 MBR -Shimano Zodias 7´2¨ Heavy I will use this rod for burning big spinnerbaits fast (size 5 willows) for smallmouth bass. All spinnerbaits that I will use will be 1/2 ounce and be thrown on 50lb braided line and a shimano curado. Is the IMX Pro worth the extra money? Which one of these rods would you recommend? I am open to looking at other rods from shimano and gloomis but no other brands because I get a good deal on these two brands. Thanks for your Help! Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 3, 2021 Super User Posted March 3, 2021 I think it is hard to find a good spinner bait rod. Lots of different opinions out there so you have to experiment, pick & choose. Over the past few decades I've spent more than I need to admit trying out different lengths & actions for throwing spinner baits. In the late 90's I found out about All Star rods, they made a Zell Rowland Spinner Bait special, which I grew to like quite a bit. The early All Star rods had great blanks, but sometimes they shaved expenses on other components. I had four of them where the locking ring over time wore down the threads on the handle and your reel wouldn't stay fastened, sometimes it would bounce out of the handle when the locking ring slipped under the pressure of a hook set. Later on, I found that I liked the Fenwick AETOS. For a while they made a MH 6'8" rod that I liked, a MH with a slightly softer tip than a worm rod, enough tip that I could load it up and make decent casts with modest effort. Since Academy Sports has became the exclusive distributor for All Star Rods, I've came across a 6'10" rod they make labeled as a spinner bait rod. It compares to the old original 6/8" ones. The length difference is mostly a slightly longer handle. The spinner bait rods that I like the most have kind of a worm rod action, that are slightly more "tippy" than my worm rods. I have buds who like the composite graphite/fiberglass rods which have a much more parabolic action. So that brings it back to you pick em. 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted March 3, 2021 Super User Posted March 3, 2021 I only use 1/2 oz spinner baits. I like my 843c rods for spinner baits better than my 844cs. Quote

I prefer a moderate fast action and have settled on two Falcon rods for most of my spinnerbait applications. A 6’10 heavy and 7’3 heavy but both fish more like a medium heavy. My favorite of all time was a 6’6 medium heavy BPS Extreme. I actually still throw some smaller frame spinners on it when I’m in shallow stumpy waters. Spinnerbaits cover way too much of a range in my fishing for one rod though. Kind of like a square bill and 10xd Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 3, 2021 Super User Posted March 3, 2021 I have the 844C and it will work fine for 1/2oz and up spinnerbaits but may struggle with 3/8oz ones. Quote
Matt_3479 Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 I don’t own the zodias but do own the 7’2” medium heavy expride and that’s what I have been using for my chatterbait, spinner bait and paddletails! Love this rod, light, loads of power! that said if your looking doe the loomis, it’s definitely worth stepping to the imx pro over the e6x. Quote
Bassin.Drew Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 7' mh or 843. IMX if you can afford it, e6x is more than enough for moving baits. IF the deal you are referring to is what I think it is all three models are out of stock for at least a few months. Quote
Big-Bass Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 I really like two rods for spinnerbaits: Daiwa Tatula Elite 7'4" Howell Swim Jig/Big Topwater Gander Mountain cheapo 7' Heavy...this one is a blast and it was like $39 like 5-10 years ago LOL. But of your choices, the 844 or an 843 ideally. Quote

If I were to rank presentations on critical rod requirements, spinnerbaits would be closer to the bottom. Maybe a custom rod if you can't find something off the shelf? Or get that rod you liked redone? Quote

Maybe a custom rod if you can't find something off the shelf? Or get that rod you liked redone? Yeah, I'm not following, either. To each their own. If a rod can cast a spinnerbait, it can fish a spinnerbait. I also don't get the "experiment" approach. In my best SpongeBob SquarePants narrator voice: "$1,500 later..." (for a spinnerbait rod! Lol) Quote
jtharris3 Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 I use the Bass Pro Carbonlite 2.0 6'-6" or a 7' MH for spinnerbaits. For closer more pinpoint casts I'll drop down to the 6'-6" rod. These rods have worked great for me. Quote
rangerjockey Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 I used the IMX 783/843 for years without any complaints. I now use what I think is the best spinnerbait /buzzzbait and bladed jig rod I've ever had .The Witch Doctor Surman 50G. They are less expensive than a IMX and the action is perfect. Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted March 5, 2021 Super User Posted March 5, 2021 ALX Zolo Deputy is a nice spinnerbait rod. Quote
