How much would a 16 ft jon boat, a 1980's model, with two boat seats, a trolling motor, and a 9.8 hp Mercury outboard with a tiller be worth? It is deeper running than your average jon, and a bit wider. It is in pretty good shape, not good paint or anything, just good metal.

How's the motor run, does the boat leak, how old is the trolling motor? What condition are the seats in? Is there a trailer included? What condition is the trailer?

This is an older boat and you need to look at it with a critical eye. It may be worth $1,300 or more...or it may be a piece of junk. Hard to tell from 3 sentences on a website.

The guys are right, you need to ask lots of questions when buying a used boat.  If you go in wanting a boat badly you may overlook things that you'll wish you hadn't later.  That's why it's hard to estimate the value of something in a description. The same boat you describe could be a good deal or a real headache.

Always ask to test drive the boat.  Even a little tiller steer boat, you want to know that the motor runs as it should and the boat doesn't leak and you can't find that out while it's sitting in the driveway.  Then if it runs well and fits your needs offer the guy what you are willing to pay for it and no more.

I don't know if the motor runs, it is an old trolling motor with a foot control, there is a trailer with worn out tires (they're tiny, so they wouldn't be expensive), it has two seats that don't match, but are in good shape, and overall looks like it would be a good fixer-upper if I can make the motor run good.

$500 tops....If you are desperate for a boat right now.

You can say 500 and I would say that is what it should be, but if you look around at the "market" you are gonna have to pay close to 1000 to get it. But that all depends on what the starting price the seller has put on it is.

If the guy hasn't put a price on it and asks you what you think it is worth then say 500, but if  he has the price between 1000-1500 it's going to be hard to make him come off of that amount.

I cannot stand it when someone is "selling" something and can't take the time to put a price on it.  Nail the seller down to a price, then offer him half that.  Seriously.  That is how negotiating should work.

You said it was a deeper running boat than most jons so i am assuming it is a v-hull not a flat bottom? what are the dimensions 16x??. And what brand? Is it riveted aluminum or all weld hull? As far as the trailer tires, what is the condition of the trailer lights? The angle of the tongue? (as in not bent or twisted and are they submersible trailer lights?) Does the boat have lights? A bilge pump atleast? How is the transom? Does the guy even have a title in hand or is he one that says he has a bill of sale to give you or lost it? There are alot of things you need to take into consideration, because even the things that dont seem to be that big of a deal like lights, bilges, and anything else minor could end up costing you alot more than you may want to spend out of pocket and take up more time for you to get on the water.

It is a flat bottom, but has taller sides.  I don't know the exact dimensions, or brand.  It has good lights, and the tongue is good.  No boat lights.  No bilge pump, and don't need one either.  Good transom.  I know the guy, so I'm sure he has a title, and it wouldn't really matter anyway.  I'll post pics soon.

Make sure it floats and don't have any HOLES in it! Also check the transom it may need to be replaced. If everything is okay condition, offer him or her about $550.00-$700.00. That is all it would be worth. Also make sure it has a title and registration for boat & trailer. I know some states don't require trailer registration, but it good to have it anyway! I had bought 2 boats since January and both had major problems, one was a semi V and the other was a Tri-Hull fiberglass. The V-hull had holes from a battery acid, and the other has rotten transom. Good Luck!
