So after milling around for 45 min. and all I’m doing is walking out with is a pack of Krackin Craws and a pack of green Carolina rig beads, something ain’t quite right.

Kinda like my last Scheels visit. Went there specifically because the Avocet RZTs were on discount and wanted a few.

Spent 45 minutes wandering the fishing section...walked out with only the RZTs I'd gone there to get.

The Dicks in my area has very little fishing gear. I quit going there over a year ago. Now, Academy is where I get most of my stuff.

Academy is not near me. I have no idea where one is even at. You guys on here speak very highly of their Crankbaits, I think there is even a recent thread on them. I went on line to order a few to try and pretty much all sold out. I’ll revisit them toward summer to see if they replenish. My thoughts are if they are sold out and not a big name brand they might have a bigger following than I would have thought. I thought I’d try 4-5 of them in patterns that generally would work for me.

But another thing that is most likely the situation also, we are not impulse buying either. I can see where that can happen and it might happen to some guys. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. We all have probably been through that to some degree or another. So at least you walked out with what you wanted to begin with. All is good.

In my case, if I like a particular bait, example a SK 3xd. And that bait in Sexy Shad should work for dang near everybody everywhere. It does for me. But I’m alway read to try a spin off color pattern of that pattern. It’s sort of like Sexy Shad is in the center and these others sort of satellite around it. In my case I’ve found that these satellite patterns I’ve ventured into trying work better for me. Are they drastic difference not really but different enough. Do the bass know the difference? Probably not. So that’s a bit of my addiction. And there are only so many different colors and that amount won’t break the bank.

living in close proximity to Lake Norman, all the local big box outlets (DSG, Academy, Walmart) still carry plenty of tackle and gear.

Couldn't tell ya!  Won't shop there and haven't been in one in probably 6 years!

Same here. If Sportsman's Warehouse doesn't have what I need I just order it.

Well, with BPS buying SW - watch SW go the way Cabelas did.

That does worry me. But not enough to step foot into a F&S/Dicks.

BPS has eliminated most of the competition in the Memphis area. We have two

Dick's  without fishing departments. Walmarts around here have a very limited

selection of basic tackle.  Academy is  about a 5/10, but they surprise on occasion.

I don't know of any independents.

I've gotten a few things from DSG - only because either no one else had them, or they wanted outrageous prices (Yes, even DSG does better in some things)

Strike King Banshee series - DSG exclusive far as I know

Zoom Goby - DSG was 30% or more cheaper than anywhere else I could find them.

I went into the Cabela's in Rogers on Saturday morning and it was loaded up again.  A lot of people rip on Cabela's for being bought out by BPS but in my opinion it still has a much better selection of tackle and fishing gear than anyone else I know of around here.  There must be 20 aisles of fishing tackle alone.  And for now, they are full of stock too.  The Lindy rep was there and I heard him say "its in stock now, but I can't guarantee it will be by June, so stock up."

I was able to get 5 reels re-spooled in about 15 minutes with their Tornado line winder.

As you walk through the doors there is a black and white picture of what appears to be the founders with a bunch of fishing gear and rods on shelves and displays, however, as you enter the doors you quickly realize things have changed as there is not a single item of fishing gear in the store.

I live in DE and the DSG is pretty loaded up. Not quite like the pictures you showed, but every isle is full. They actually expanded it less then a year ago to where all of the hunting used to be as well. They even had a bunch of the OG Rapala Flat Cranks in multiple colors last time I stopped in. I usually stop in to check some things out and see them in person since they are usually well over priced compared to other places.

The interesting thing is there is a Cabelas about 20 min away from this location. So even with the competition they have a rather large, stocked up fishing supply.

the dicks around here are for soccer moms. Not much left for outdoor gear.

My Dicks/Field and Stream is like the one shown in the OP. Just fishing poles are not above like that. Massive amount of fishing stuff and constantly updated with new stuff.  This is in Latham/Albany NY.

We have a.....forgot how to use English's / Field and Stream Combo as well. They are usually well stocked, though it did get a bit rough around August of last year. The two main guys that work the department are rather knowledgeable as well, especially the older guy (probably retired from his first job). They have a decent rod selection, and it's nice to be able to hold a rod in your hand before buying. Same for lures - it's nice to see them in person. I get my military discount plus rack up their rewards points, so the prices are not bad once those are factored in.

Is the "forgot how to use English" a censoring because of the name of the store? I used the singular possessive version instead of the plural version like everyone else...

Our one DSG is about the same - with the difference being the rods are on floor-display racks instead of atop aisle rows.

Locally from DSG we got a Cabelas about 30-35 minutes, a Scheels about 15-20 minutes, a SW about 35-40 minutes and a Joe's about 25-30 minutes.

So maybe it's not about proximity to other shops...

Our's used to be Galyan's though and they always had great tackle selections.  Seeing Scheels is crazy to me as I grew up with the Scheel family.

The last time I was in Dick's store was maybe 2 years ago.  Most of the store was ball sports, exercise equipment, and clothing.

The DSG near me is stock really well, I buy stuff from them if I'm in a pinch and also because they have a kick ass hand-pulled noodle place across the street, but usually just get my stuff from TW.

There are 2 within a 15 min. drive. Both have some stuff , mostly bass, but not much. I went last sat. to get my license (not in) and noticed they have a good selection of Googan stuff this year. Fortunately for me, i can walk out empty handed these days.  ?

There are 8 DSG's in the Indy area and none them carry a good selection fishing stuff but the one closest to me is getting better.  They have stocked a few items that are new to them, like Daiwa Tatulas and few St. Croix rods.   What is strange is that they are the closest store with fishing stuff to a large local reservoir and nobody that fishes there buys stuff from DSG because they are always more expensive than Tackle Warehouse.  I only get what a few things from them when they have a sale and I have coupons.   On the good side though, they will price match and take their coupons off of the matched price.  For instance Amazon had Plano Edge 3700 boxes for $15.80 on a lightning sale.  DSG matched the price and let me use a 20% off coupon, making them about $13 a piece.
