Young_Plugg Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 Hi! I was looking to get more rods for bass fishing, and I was wondering what would be a good 3-4 rod setup? I do pond and lake fishing and I am from Michigan. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted March 2, 2021 Super User Posted March 2, 2021 Figure out what presentations you use the most and build your rod selection around that. For instance, many people might recommend a heavy rod for large swimbaits, frogs, and thick cover. But I don't own a heavy rod because I don't throw large swimbaits, and there's not really much thick cover around here. So a medium heavy Is good enough for me and covers a lot more ground. Other people might not like finesse fishing, and don't throw many light baits. So they may not need a light spinning setup. Or they may not throw too many crankbaits, and don't need a dedicated rod for it when they do. It all depends on what baits and techniques you use. Beyond that, all I can say for sure is a medium heavy/fast rod at around 7' long is probably the one universal must have, due to versatility. Quote

I’d be careful getting setups for things you don’t really use often. I don’t love my 7’ medium bait casting rod. Wish I’d just done 6’6” or a 7’ MH. Feels like I’m whipping a cooked spaghetti. But I got it and I’m stuck with it for now. I got it cause Roland Martin considers it a must. I now disagree ?♂️ I don’t have a dedicated crank setup cause I only throw lipless for 2 months a year. And even then not consistently. Quote
Super User ATA Posted March 2, 2021 Super User Posted March 2, 2021 My Suggestion: 1- Spinning Rod M Power With 2500 Size reel 2/3-Bait Casting Rod M/MH Power With 150 size Reel 3/4-Bait Casting Rod H/Xh Power With 300 size Reel Just think of your budget and choose your brands for your rods and reels. They are total 5 but you can ignore M bait caster or ignore XH Bait caster if not heavy swim baiting. Rod size very depending on where you fishing, Most likely you are shore fishing, I would go 6'10" to 7' For them. Except h/XH better go 7'6". Quote
5by3 Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 7’ M spinning 7’ M casting 7’ MH casting 7-7’6 H casting 2500 reel on the spinning rod and 6.3:1 reels on the casting rods. This would cover about any technique you want to throw. The lengths can be adjusted based on your preferences. 1 Quote
Dens228 Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 For me............... Two MH/Fast for general purpose do everything One M/Mod for crankbaits/jerkbaits/topwater One H/Fast for the slop Quote
Matt_3479 Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 Tough call, depending on price point I can adjust but for what Id want/have would be; -nrx 852s with ci4+ for your do all spinning tackle - nrx 853c with met 2020 for do all casting (jigs, small top water, small paddle rails, t-rigs - imx pro 845c cbr for cranks - glx 894c for heavy jigs and cover. that said I’d really like to add to that list for specific things. been fishing the 7’ lite plus expride and its awesome for neds and real finesse. a frog rod as it’s one of my favourite ways to fish. Tom I’m in agreement with this. My first rod was/is a7’-0” med-fast action (spinner baits & small/med cranks/squarebills) second was/is a 7’2” med hvy-fast action (jigs & t-rigs) but could and did handle frogs albeit no crazy pads/weeds last was/is a7’-2” med-fast spinning setup handles Ned rigs to wacky worms. Although I’ve enjoyed and purchased several more rods & reels I also pond/shore fish and never felt I couldn’t cover all my needs. Quote
LCG Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 I prefer shorter rods as I fish from a kayak and the bank where some places have a lot of tall grass or overhanging trees. Medium, extra fast spinning combo. Medium heavy extra fast casting combo. Working on a medium fast casting combo at the moment. Length is 6'6"-7', that's the sweet spot for me. Quote
