N.Y. Yankee Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 When you are using a mono or flouro leader, what do you do if you break off the leader? do you carry small spools of leader material or just cut a few feet off a spool of line and re-tie? Do you carry extra line with you or just change rods? Quote

Super User MN Fisher Posted March 1, 2021 Super User Posted March 1, 2021 I just carry the original spools of what I use for leader material in one of the pockets of one of my bags (in the canoe I have 2-3700 bags and 2-3600 bags). I start with 6'-8' - don't discard/tie on a new leader until it's down to 3' or less. 1 Quote

Super User MickD Posted March 1, 2021 Super User Posted March 1, 2021 I use mono and FC leader material, not "line", for leaders, and have spools of it on board to replace a break-off. Which is rare, but even in the situation where I've cut off a number of times and the leader gets too short, I need replacement. And I have spools of various pound tests of leader material. Not line. 2 Quote
huZZah Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 All of the above when I still did leaders. You can waste half the day retying so I changed rods the most. Retied several over lunch if need be. 2 Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted March 2, 2021 Super User Posted March 2, 2021 Just cut a few feet off a spool of line and retie if available. Bout as fancy as I get 1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted March 2, 2021 Super User Posted March 2, 2021 I use mono or YZH for leaders. I bring a partial filler spool if I need to replace a leader. 1 Quote
Ogandrews Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 One tip I will give is unless you are buying a specialized stretchy floro shock leader like sublime fc100, don’t waste the money on “leader material” lines, just get a spool of high quality line. I like mono for 90% of my leaders. Only time I will really switch to floro is if it’s super clear, like over 10ft of visibility, or I want to use 25+Lbs line then I’ll go to fc100 because it’s thin and super strong. Mono for most applications makes a much better leader than floro IMO, just pick your favorite mono and tie it on. If you are going to go with floro, pick a quality one like sunline sniper/assassin, abraseX, tatsu, gama ect. In my opinion most “leader” floros are just overpriced 30 yard spools of normal floro, besides fc100. 1 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted March 2, 2021 Super User Posted March 2, 2021 I bought flouro leader. It feels like flouro line to me. I’ll buy line next time and get more by spending the same or less. Dunno. 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 2, 2021 Super User Posted March 2, 2021 Leader material is stiffer than line which helps to keep blade bait hooks from tangling. 1 Quote
softwateronly Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 That sunline fc 100 shock flouro is really the only dedicated "leader" I have. Everything else is just snipped off of a spool. That said, the fc100 is pretty amazing and I think it'll take over all of my heavier applications. scott Quote
