I have a question I have the shimano curado dc and I am in the market for a new rod! I don’t want to break the bank in a rod! So I am wondering what you all suggest. I am eyeing the dobyns fury I have only fished st.croix the last 5 years and want to try something different I would like something very sensitive and something I can fish square bills chtterbaits and cranks on. I am excited to hear what everyone suggests. Thank you guys

I highly recommend the 733c or 703c for squarebills. If you want a little more power, the 734c or 704c. I like the 734c for my skirted lures, I use trailers and I feel you need that extra boost of power with the 4 power

Dobyns runs about a flex and a half below what they advertise, in general. For example, a medium heavy              (3 power) could be considered a medium heavy lite.

3- medium heavy

4- heavy

5- mag heavy

6- mag extra heavy

This is how it was explained to me, anyway. Rod companies are relative to what you prefer and is an ongoing debate. I will probably get ripped because of this.

I use a 703c for squarebills, traps, jerkbaits, poppers, Shakyheads, weightless flukes/senkos, Movement 80X. I use a 7 speed reel and 15 lb monofilament.

While, I use the 733c for light Texas Rigs, 3/4oz Dark Sleeper, poppers, Devil's Horse Zoom ol. monster with a 1/4 oz, finesse jigs. I use a 8 speed 30lb braid.

Some might disagree with this, but at the end of the day, you are fishing what you like. My 703c and 733c don't do everything perfect, but as a pond hopper/kayaker, I try to keep it simple. I don't have room for 6 to 8 rods in a kayak and it really sucks carrying 6 to 8 rods pond hopping.

I have a 703 fury and a 704 Sierra. That’s all.  Having said that I’m a fan.  I just spent 8 hours casting a small jig with the 703 topped w Shimano SKX DC. I was casting so far!  And friggen accurate.  I’d have to thumb the spool to make sure I didn’t hit land.

sensitivity.  I feel things great.  I detected my first jig bite.  I felt things just get heavy and I did a WTH set the hook. I thought I would bury that jig into yet another snag when I felt the fish tremble.

I’ll get the next power up if they have a 7 footer. (Fits in my truck)

I would not describe the Furies as "very sensitive". I like them for moving baits, and top water much more than for plastics and such.

You did not mention Price range. Just mentioned St. Croix.

Dobyns Kaden Crankbait Rod  KD 610-4CB at $169.99 or Champion XP Crankbait rod DC 704 CB at $249.99 would be good choices.

The 703C or 733C fishes square bills very nicely, especially in grass when you want that faster tip rod, but you'd be limited to 3/8oz chatterbaits. The 704C/734C is a much more ideal for chatterbaits, but the only squarebills I'd throw on that is a larger 2.5 size with larger hooks. Both rods do make a versatile two rod pairing as well.

Finally, if you can afford the extra money, the Sierra is worth it over the Fury. Or maybe the Kaden.

Step up to at least Sierra, Champion better.

IMO better two separate rods, one for treble baits and another for single hook(chatter). In the fury line 705cb and either a 703/733 or 704/734 depending on bait weight and cover fished.

I agree with the above post, Fury 705CB works great for medium size cranks up to 1oz max but also a good option for squarebill, 703 is the sweet spot for squarebill when you want accuracy and for chatterbaits better a 4 power.

Maybe you can find a more versatile Dobyns model in other series as suggested, Kaden, Sierra, Champion..

There is one Dobyns model that would overlap fairly well for your applications and that’s the Kaden 735CB.  Don’t let the 5 power fool you, it’s a CB power.  The Blank is a bit more moderate in action without sacrificing power.  The sweet spot will be 3/8-1/2 oz. so the vibrating jig is well in play.  The 610-4CB will IMO would be a little under powered but it’s a great stick.
