Trying to pair a nice reel with my Megabass orochi Jerkbait special. Mainly using it for throwing mb110 xraps, hj14. Slowly building my rod selection and have a curado hg201 on my loomis for crank baits. Would like to stick with Shimano but have heard great things about the Diawa Steez A. Is the $500 Steez worth it when I could buy 3 more Hg201 for the same price?

Also I’m typically throwing 14lb mono on it so spool size may need to be bigger.

For me no reel is worth $500, but it depends on an individual's financial situation and their priorities.  Is it a great reel?  I'm sure it is.  Is it worth $500?  I don't know, is it to you?

Tatulas are pretty darned good.

I’ve come to realize that it is sometimes worth it to pay more upfront and get a great product with a warrant ensuring you’ll get years of use of it so I’m not against paying 500$ if the warrant is justifying it. Would you say a Tatula sv tw is better than a curado hg201?

First day on here, forgot I had to quote you for you to get notification lol. See above

How about the Metanium MGL 150, it's a premium priced reel designed for lighter baits and it's built by Shimano, they make a Curado MGL 70 also if your looking to spend a bit less...alternatively I have experience with the Tatula line, while I prefer the Shimano offerings I really can't objectively state that Daiwa are any less effective or less impressive, for me it really just boiled down to which one felt better in my hand, that answer for you might end up being Daiwa, either way I don't think you can really go wrong from a nuts and bolts standpoint, both companies are turning out some amazing products.

I have that rod and use a Met MGL and love it!

If your set on tipping the scale a little more, the new

Anteres would get the call......or Conquest  Calcutta 100

No, you don't need to quote people to get notifications. They get notified when there's a post on a thread where they've posted.

Thanks for the input! So many reel names I learn a new one each time I come on this thread and that’s fairly frequent! Lol.

As far as the number on the reel. Is a MGL 70 going to be much smaller spool size than a 150, and 150 will be smaller than my curado 200?

For me being 22 years old you sure are making me feel technologically challenged hahaha. Thanks for the help sir.

It's absolutely smaller than the standard Curado K, not night and day mind you, but it's noticeable, I don't own any metaniums, too rich for my blood, so I couldn't really say, but it is my understanding that the numerical system used by Shimano generally indicates sizes, 200 is larger than a 70 etc, but I don't know much more concretely than that.

I just worry with being in pike, musky, and walleye waters, I use 14 lb mono and don’t want to get spooled if I hook into a good one. Maybe I stay in the 150, 200 range?

I think you can answer this one for yourself easily.

If you had problems with the Steez, would you say to yourself, "Dang! if I would have bought three Curados, I'd have a backup right now, and I could continue fishing!"

The reason I say that is that I know a guy who always buys two reels. Always. He says that problems usually occur during the peak of the season. Waiting sometimes 5-6 weeks for a resolution or repair makes his blood boil, so he always has a backup.

How would YOU feel if the Steez broke in the middle of the season?

Good luck on your decision!       jj

Lol, that makes perfect sense actually, everybody who didn't maintain/have maintained during the off-season overloads the repair centers with issues early on and as other reels have issues it just compounds the problem, your friend is a smart fellow.

Can't help ya there man, I don't have toothy critters like that most places I've fished, I'd love to find out what it's like some day, but no luck so far, you also have the option of braid to a leader, which might help some, but you'd have to check with some of the guys who have experience with those big toothy monsters

570$ for a fishing reel!? Don’t get me wrong I am a gear junkie and like to have the luxury rods and reels but 1000 for a fishing rod combo is out of my budget lol. Thank you for your input. Maybe one day!

Are you familiar with the scorpion 1000xt? It looks like you have to order them from Japan, or buy them used.. is that correct?

In your first post $500 was just a drop in the bucket, but add $70 and now you can't keep the lights on?

Lol never a drop in the bucket. But good point, only 70 more than a Steez. Guess I need to look into one of those gear testing company’s and see what makes these reels so pricy.

I don't own any JDM stuff, from what I've heard they make what could arguably be the best stuff on the market over there, and to hear the scuttlebutt it'd be a pretty short argument, but there's a premium price associated with premium products, and the day you see me fishing JDM reels and 4 figure combo's is the day you'll have the option of putting me on your fantasy fishing roster, because you had better believe somebody else will be paying for it lol.

I have a curado 200 K and an SLX 70 MGL. The Curado holds about 110yds of 14lb mono that I have spooled up, my SLX 70 MGL holds about 90yds of line of 10lb mono.

So for what you want, I would stick with a 150 or 200.

Don't worry. I've landed over a dozen pike on 4 lb. mono. Yes, I had the line cut or broke a few times, but I was not spooled. I also have a setup with 6 lb. mono. I've landed pike with that, and I have never lost the fight. This was in water that had no obstructions, of course.

I have a suspicion that many fishermen underestimate their drag setting, and thereby underestimate how much pull they can exert on a fish. Either that, or they underestimate how much pull they can actually put on a given test line.

Either way, you don't baby a fish, especially a big fish. You fight them to within an ounce of the capacity of your rig. And believe me, with 14 lb. mono, that's gonna be one heck of a fight!       jj

JDM is your friend

Either the JDM Antares 70A or the Daiwa Steez SV TWS.  I have both and each would work great for jerkbaits.   Also, 10-12lb Fluorocarbon would be my choice.

Found a deal on a SV TWS. Gets here the 8th. I’m stoked!

Agreed

All of my baitcasters are Steez, Metanium, and Aldebarans and I absolutely love them.  Last time I looked, you could get a JDM ‘20 Metanium for around $300.

The other thing about higher end gear, if you take care of it, the resale will usually remains high.  I just sold 2 G. Loomis NRX rods that I bought at a 25% discount, fished them for 3 years, and sold for $50 less than I paid for them.
