Matt_3479 Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 So I’m looking to replace 1 rod in my Arsenal this year as last year I upgraded pretty much everything else. A few spinning reels need upgrading as well so that’s my focus this season. I currently have a 13 fishing envy black 7’6” heavy that I’m looking at upgrading. I’d like to use use this rod for a few techniques if possible but mainly will have a creature tied on for flipping. It might do a little Caroline rigging as well. Looking at trying another megabass but open to options in the loomis, and shimano expride series current line up consists of; - glx 822dsr drop shot - expride 7’ lite plus for neds mainly - nrx 852s main spinning set up -glx 852c tubes mainly -nrx 853c a lot of senko work and jigs around docks -glx 894c main jig rig - expride 7’2” med heavy moving back rod (chatter, paddle tail, spinner baits) -imx pro 845cbr squarebill rod -imx pro 884 frog rod - orochi xx launcher deep crank this new rod will replace my creature baits flipping, Carolina rigs etc. Quote
freelancer27 Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Whats ur budget? Any brand preferences? What lure weight do you want to throw? Quote

I don’t want to go custom but didn’t really think about budget. I’d like to throw comfortably in the 1 1/2oz range with trailers. Not something I do a bunch but don’t want to feel like it’s going break when I do Quote
SproDD79 Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 I would consider the Shimano Poison Adrena Casting Rod 7'4" Heavy. Quote
freelancer27 Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 When you are talking about 1.5oz one should consider an extra heavy. For that technique i personally us a Daiwa Steez AGS 7'9 XH. There more affordable options available. Shimano exprides are a decent buy. Quote

Sloppy quality control mainly. I have a buddy who would like it so I figured I could upgrade 7 hours ago, freelancer27 said: When you are talking about 1.5oz one should consider an extra heavy. I wanted the 1 1/2oz to be able to get down to the depths fast on the Carolina rig and the odd like that’s heavy veg Quote

Expride runs $260-$300. Megabass $200-$500 depending on line. So a very nice budget. OP, Witch Doctor makes some nice rods. Maybe an Oracle? Rated 1/2-2 oz. I expect the Hydrilla Gorilla would be too heavy. 1-6oz. Have never thrown that heavy of weight. Plus rods you are looking at are out of my budget unless a good used deal comes along. Which is how I got my Shaman. Little less that 50% of original price. Th Orochi XX Launcher is rated 3/8-2 oz. I expect a rod rated to 2 oz. would be better than one rated to 1-1/2 oz. However, I know there are rods that can easily handle over their rating just like there are rods that don't handle maximum rating well at all. I own both cases. That is why reviews and opinions from users on here (and other dedicated fishing forums) is a huge help in deciding on which rod to get. I'm not one that can help in this particular instance. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 27, 2021 Super User Posted February 27, 2021 I was recently looking at buying about the same type of rod you are and ended up with the Megabass P5 Super Destroyer. It is shorter than most flip/pitch rods but I kind of like it that way. The guy I usually fish with stays so close to the bank that longer rods are sometimes an issue. Another rod that I took a hard look at was the St. Croix Legend Elite 7'4'' H Fast. It is a heavy duty rod but some how balanced. I have a couple LE and wanted to try something different so the Megabass fit the bill. This rod sounds more like it may fit your needs better. Quote
Matt_3479 Posted March 1, 2021 Author Posted March 1, 2021 I was thinking of trying the bunker buster but it’s only rated too 1.2 oz. it’s more then heavy enough, but I wanted to throw the 1.5oz on the Carolina in deep water. another thought was 7’6” xh expride, 905c mbr conquest (hard to find and maybe top my budget, so still thinking on that one), Quote

It is agreat rod, but in my opinion, the tip is too soft for throwing heavy jigs (in cover). I use it as a moving bait rod for spinner and chatterbaits. If you can wait. Maybe wait till the end of March, when the new NRX are rumored to be announced'. I would then get the equivilant of the 905/895 (that is hopefully better balanced) and be done with it 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted March 1, 2021 Super User Posted March 1, 2021 Sounds like someone who needs a white python ? Quote

Ski Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 Have you looked @ Lews KVD series? Price point is $99.99 23 sizes, several bait specific choices. https://www.lews.com/rods/kvd Quote
softwateronly Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 I grabbed the 7'7" expride Heavy/Mod Fast this winter. While looking for opinions online, it seems to not be talked about much, but that 7'6" XH was almost completely missing from the places I searched. Sorry I have nothing to offer, just would love to hear what you think about whatever you choose. Best of luck! scott Quote

RDB Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 I spoke with G.Loomis last week and they said there were no rod changes coming. I can’t confirm or deny...just sharing what they told me. I don’t know what you think about Kistler but I have had a number of Helium and Z-Bones over the years and they are light, sensitive rods. The 5 powers are rated up to 1 1/2 oz and have lengths up to 7’6” (7’10” on the Helium). They always have sales...I think typically between 25-40% based on $ spent. If you need something heavier, I think these are rated up to 10 oz. Quote

Bit i know from a big retailer that their announcement is not too far out. Quote
Gazz Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 Check out the Megabass Destroyer P5 Tequila Baccarac. Very high end rod that can actually do a ton of things well. I don’t have personal experience with it but have heard amazing things. Quote

Who knows...I was told by the person handling my warranty replacement that my rod was ready and would be released in the first batch but that it would be the same. Could a new rod still drop in March...sure. Could it be delayed...no clue. Could it be at ICAST...who knows. Could they be surprising me with full Torzite and cork...one can hope. What I do know is they approved the replacement in early Sept. and I’m tired of waiting. Quote

Absolute insane price to me, but the craftsmanship is remarkable and the versatility at that length was most appealing. I figured my most expensive stick will fish the baits I enjoy the most, reactive glides, swimmers, frogs, big topwater, 6" soft swimbaits, big swimjigs, etc. Hopefully, everything you and I heard is true! scott Quote
scbassin Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 I have a Dobyns Champion XP DC 736. It's a excellent rod & I use it for what you want it for. It will get them out of the thick stuff. Quote
