Schuyler co Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I was looking for a rod to throw medium diving cranks and bladed jigs under $200...called the shop at Dobyns and they recommended a Fury 733c so I bought one. Also need to purchase a rod for square bills/jerkbaits. Anyone have any thoughts on the FR 733c and what other rod would be a good purchase? Haven’t had a chance to use it yet ...need some water time but I’m in Illinois and it’s gonna be awhile longer. Thanks in advance guys. Quote
ironbjorn Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 The 3 power is a fantastic do-it-all smaller crank/lipless/squarebill/jerkbait rod. But I just can't believe they recommended a 3 power for a bladed jig. I'm not going to tell the experts they're wrong about their rod, but I'm going to tell you that you're almost certainly going to hate a 3/8oz bladed jig + trailer on a 3 power. It overloads the rod. It casts like poop. It doesn't feel solid on a hookset with that heavy hook. You have what you need to cover your squarebills and jerkbaits in the 3 power so get a 4 power next. Quote

That’s what I was thinking too....I think he was mainly recommending for the cranks. So, use it for those treble hook applications and get a 4 power for bladed jigs. Got it. Quote
Kevhead19 Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I use my Fury 733C for the big spook style walking baits in IL. It works really, really well for that also in addition to lipless. To echo - the 4 power is pretty nice with a 3/8oz chatterbait - I've used the Sierra series for that (734c) but moved towards the glass style rods but it gets pretty technique specific at that point. Got ya...curious as to what reel and line you use for throwing spooks and lipless on it ? Quote

I use the Tatula 100 (new body style) - 7.3 speed or the Johnny Morris Platinum 8.3 speed - 40lb braid and a mono leader (10-14lb depending on what I have with me). I use a leader that stops just before the line guide since I retie throughout the day. I have 6 of those Tatula 100s for my other rods that I rotate through as I really like that frame size. However, the Johnny Morris is a sleeper of a reel and has become my favorite. I got it last year on sale. I can't bring myself to pay full msrp for it but it's golden at a good sale price. Quote
kayaking_kev Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 I love the Fury 703c for jerkbaits, squarebills, and shallow divers, but I wouldn't throw medium divers on it unless their light enough and the trebles aren't too big. Not the best power for bladed jigs though. Quote

However , for a Chatterbait + Trailer you would do best with #30 lb. ~ #40lb. braid mainline to get a decent hook set as with say #17 lb. FC line the FR733c. may be too limber for the application for a good hook set. Quote
Bass Rutten Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 The 705cb will do both cranks and bladed jigs extremely well with the caveat (for me) of using braided line, mono was just too spongy and dead for me with this particular rod. Quote
