Fishin' Fool Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 Good evening from the snowy north. The snow has finally started melting and my "Gone Fishing" sign just peeked out from the 3 foot tall snow drift and saw its shadow. Only 10 more weeks of winter to go. We should be good to go by May 1st when you all are too hot down south. 3 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 24, 2021 Super User Posted February 24, 2021 Actually, May isnt too bad in N. Florida. It’s usually a very good month for me. Im glad you’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel up there... 1 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted February 25, 2021 Super User Posted February 25, 2021 With winters getting shorter MA has been open-water fishable in the first week of March in recent years. Judging by the long term forecast looks to be the case this year as well. 2 Quote
Dens228 Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I was out in my kayak on March 14th last year, not looking so good this year but who knows........ 1 Quote

You're only 20min away from me, and I'd say over half the time you should be able to get on the water by mid-March. And bass are C&R year-round, as of a few years ago! Quote

ironbjorn Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I'm in the north and looking to be on the water around Daylight Savings Time. With this forecast, all the ice on the smaller waters will be melted within a week or two at most. 1 Quote

It's just creating slush on the surface. It's gonna be a bit for us. Quote

I'm predicting ice out here in about that same time frame. Quote
Finessegenics Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 10 weeks is about right for me too. Open water will come sooner than that but the whole month of April is closed season for most game fish here (not even allowed to target them). So I’m patiently awaiting the month of May. Thankfully, it was a mild winter for us. 1 Quote
Deephaven Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 March is the snowiest month of the year here, average ice out on Tonka is April 11th...we have some more winter for sure but that just gives us time to get the honey do list cleaned up. Quote
Super User gim Posted February 25, 2021 Super User Posted February 25, 2021 Most of the winter other than the 2 weeks in the deep freeze was mild. It will definitely be a while but 18 inches of ice with some melting snow actually isn’t all that much. Some years there’s more than 2 feet of ice and a lot more snow. Long range forecast is calling for 50’s and potentially 60 degrees the week of March 8. I think the first week of April will bring open water here. 1 Quote

I'm hoping it only goes up. 13 minutes ago, MN Fisher said: They're still reporting up to 18" of ice on Minnetonka - even with the 40s we've been seeing. It's just creating slush on the surface. Super User soflabasser Posted February 25, 2021 Super User Posted February 25, 2021 Seems like this has been a much colder than normal Winter for many places and not so much for others. Good news is that Spring will be here soon. Quote

Michigander Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 Last year I was out in the kayak about now. Not warm by any stretch but enough ice was gone that I could fish. Still got snow on the ground now, but days are warming. Quote
ABrugs Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I’m targeting the first Saturday in April to hit Lake St. Clair. Wow, even just typing that got me pretty amped up! 2 Quote
