Sherlock 60 Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 I said just about everything needed in the subject line, but should add that this Mojo Bass spinning rod is a technique specific rod rated for "Plastics" and that I'd like to stay at or under $150. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 24, 2021 Super User Posted February 24, 2021 That will work! 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 25, 2021 Global Moderator Posted February 25, 2021 IMO, the 6' 8" M/XF "Wacky Style", rod is a better rod. I had a bunch of Mojos before switching to the LTB's, but I kept that one, almost specifically for throwing stick worms. Maybe if you're making really long cast and needing the extra distance and hook setting ability, I might go with the longer rod. 4 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 25, 2021 Super User Posted February 25, 2021 I know that rod. It will work. I use a slightly heavier Fenwick HMG (MH/ex fast tip) rod for the same bait. It works for me. I go with 15 lb braid/ fluorocarbon leader. When I get bit I feel like I can drag any fish out of any cover with my rig. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted February 25, 2021 Super User Posted February 25, 2021 I go the other way, I use a ML/F 7'2" spinning rod for Senko's, but very seldom do I fish it in any moderate to heavy cover. For cover I switch over to my 7' MH/F baitcaster. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted February 25, 2021 Super User Posted February 25, 2021 I'd wait a couple weeks and see what the new St Croix Victory rods are about... oe Quote
Super User Spankey Posted February 25, 2021 Super User Posted February 25, 2021 I have a similar set up but chose the shorter M 6’9” Mojo. Seemed to balance better with a Nasci 3000. Personal feel preference. I use this set up for heavier plastics and stick baits. I fish a SC 6’10” ML w/2000 for lighter stuff. Grubs, NED, Trigs, worms and craws. If you can get a good balance with the 7 footer go for it. Quote
Deephaven Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I have 2 SC rods for it. One MXF and one MHF. The heavier rod I use deeper into the grass with a heavier hook. Picks up fish when they are buried better than the lighter rod...but when they arent as deep in the cover I prefer the lighter rod. Quote

I have the MB 6'8" M/XF "Wacky Style" rod and it is excellent for throwing senkos! Quote
Allen Der Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I like a shorter rod for wacky. 6'6" MF Premier is what I use. You can pick up a split grip premier on sale from BPS or Cabela's during the spring classic Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted February 25, 2021 Super User Posted February 25, 2021 That rod is mo On 2/24/2021 at 2:15 PM, Sherlock 60 said: I said just about everything needed in the subject line, but should add that this Mojo Bass spinning rod is a technique specific rod rated for "Plastics" and that I'd like to stay at or under $150. in my very humble opinion: that rod wouldn’t work for me. Why? It has the wrong hook keeper loop. I like the one that is below the handle that you can clip a drop shot sinker on. Or in your case, the wacky SENKO. I LOVE my med-fast spinning rod. It’s the Phenix Maxim. It’s 7 foot 3 tho. Quote

I have about 3 Bass-X and I'm pretty happy with them but after holding a Mojo Bass I'm ashamed I didn't spend the extra $20-30 for the Mojo Bass. So much lighter! Was planning on picking up a Mojo Bass this spring but noticed that the Premier is a bit cheaper. Guess I need to head to the store and get my hands on both to compare. Trying to decide if I should get a Spinning and Casting rod or just a Casting rod this Spring. Boat electronics are calling my name too. Quote

Most likely I'll do more wacky this summer but probably not enough to go with a wacky-specific rod. Quote
Jmoney402 Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 I have a 7' MF SC that is mainly used for TRig weightless senkos and shakeyheads. Paired with a tatula sv and think its perfect for mid gauge 3/0 hooks. I use a 7' MLXF SC for wacky rigs. Quote

Premiers are better made than the Bass X which are also SCII and made in Mexico.. Mojos are made in Mexico with SCIII, so they are a bit lighter. Premiers are not technique specific like the Bass X and Mojo bass. I find Premiers are better all around/multipurpose rods than the Mojos. Bass Pro and Cabelas have exclusive split grip Premiers that will be on sale for the spring classic starting at $99 with a trade in/$119 without. St Croix also has a new series called the victory coming out which are similar to but probably only slightly better than the Mojo. They are made in Wisconsin. Quote

I know Mojo Bass use to have Technique specific writing on them, but it seems now they really just list them as a 7'1" MH or whatever and you should know the application based on that. Typically most of my rods are either a 7'1" Medium Fast Spinning Rod or a 7'1" MH Casting Rod. I have tried not to buy a specific rod on one end or the other but I have been yearning to get a Ultra Light St. Croix panfish rod for Crappie Fishing. I did see the BPS sale. I was planning on going to buy a cheap (~$20) kids rod from Walmart and donating that to BPS in exchange for the $10-30 off depending on what rod I get. Last year I bought a Bass-X Casting rod paired with a Shimano Curado DC. I thought about getting a Mojo Bass this year and either another Curado DC (fantastic reel, but pricey!) or getting a SLX and putting that on the Bass-X. I'll probably make the Bass-X a crankbait rod and use the Mojo Bass for a bit more sensitive applications (Top Water, Plastics). I also have a Reign I bought on sale for the St. Croix Customer Appreciation day that is a casting reel. I hate the Daiwa CC80 that came on that. I need to take the Lews baitcasting reel my dad bought me or something else to put on that. But I've been using that as a Frogging rod. My 2-3 Bass-X I have that are spinning rods are paired to a Shimano Sahara 2500 reel. Pretty happy with those, but I have grown to like Baitcasters a lot more over the past 2 years as I have started buying nicer reels and getting better at fine tuning the drag/brake. Quote

I cannot see the slightest difference in build quality from the mojo and premier. Maybe premier has better guides, but the craftsmanship on the mojo, Mexico or not, is just as good in my opinion. I'd just as soon get the better blank out of the mojo. Quote
Deephaven Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 I am all about made in the USA, but would never buy a premier. There are a couple mojo's in my house though. Compare an Avid and Premier and you will never want a premier. Compare the Avid and Mojo and you wonder if the Avid is worth it. I think it is, but the difference is less than between the Mojo and Premier. Quote
optimator Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 I've been using a Daiwa Tatula 610 M/XF. I like it a lot. I did pick up a 7' ML/F Avid-X that I'm excited to try. Quote
