Never taken a jig bass. Sad but true.

In my defense I’m not even a year into bass fishing.  Especially not from my kayak.  
 

but the jig.  I’m bordering obsessed.  I’ll get the skunk off for the day and then I’ll toss the jig an extraordinary amount of time. Haha.  
 

it will happen soon I think. It’s so similar to me fishing a Tex-rig which is one of my confidence moves, it has to happen. I have some smaller jigs coming in the mail soon.

Not sure if you saw or read through the Jig Thread yet. IT IS INCREDIBLE!!! Commit a few hours and read though it, so much fantastic information that really helped me a lot

 

Honestly I was like this up until last year. I spent about 1-1.5 years only tossing T Rigged worms, doing well, having fun. Then I challenged myself last spring/summer to try and catch bass on as many techniques as possible. From Wacky, to Rage, to Tokyo, Jigs, Ned, Chatterbaits, Top Water, etc. I think I ended up landing bass on around 12-15 different techniques or rigging styles. 

 

I love the weightless T Rig worm, but expanding out really opened up Bass Fishing for me. I already thinking about what is next. This year I am going hard into Jerkbaits and Cranks.

A lot of people would argue against that, but I’m pretty clueless when it comes to jigs so I’ll leave that for somebody else. Still, I’ll include my suggestions. 

 

Have you tried using one for a reaction bite? Like pitching it at specific targets and trying to trigger them with the right ROF? Or punching sparse grass maybe? I feel like that’s the easiest way to cross off a jig fish from your bucket list. Dragging jigs is a whole different game I think.

The Jig is one of the most productive lures for fishing heavy cover of any type known to anglers.

 

The Jig is one of the most productive lures for catching larger than average bass.

But despite its pure awesomeness the angler must keep in mind there will be days when the bass simply do not want a jig.

 

So to all the young anglers (not chronological but experientially) struggling when casting, flipping, pitching, or punching with the Awesome Jig keep in mind there will be times when the Jig aint gonna be that AWESOME.

You will catch them, just stick with it. If I can catch bass with jigs, anyone can. Don’t be afraid to use plastic worm or grub as a trailer, doesn’t have to be a $1 keitech or rage bait

Funny story. Buddy and I raced for a good looking spot.  I have a faster yak so I casted in first.  A jig.  Nothing

 

buddy tossed in a smaller Kietech jig and WHAM!  He got a good one.  Haha. I was happy for him but that was tough to watch.  

 

I have high hopes for this weekend.  My friend is in Colorado!

Keitech jig is good. Keitech as jig TRAILER is not as important

And don't be afraid to set the hook on weeds, rocks, twigs........

As you gain experience you'll set the hook less on them and more on bass.

Thanks. I have an unhealthy number of keitech jigs on the way.  I’ll size up some trailers at my local shop after I get them.

Depends on where I’m fishing. I’m a big fan of not getting stuck on bottom so I usually flare the weed guard out and leave it as long as it came

The only thing jigs are good at, in my opinion, is flipping and pitching into shallow water cover.  But man are they good at that one thing!

NorCal where the OP fishes has the Delta, Clear Lake, Berryessa, Foothill lakes all world class bass fisheries. The Delta is tidal river systems with 1500 miles of bass filled water ways, heavy cover. Brown jig w/blue trailer or black w/red trailer are standbys. The lakes lots of colors work Browns, PB&J, greens, purple, black. Shad, etc. 

Berkley’s new Jester in Sprayed Grass and S.Africa should do the trick everywhere up north.

Slow down, don’t be afraid to lose a few jigs.

I love fishing a jig, but I also know that it's just another tool. You have to recognize that some days it's the deal, and some days it isn't. It is kind of like a T-rig, but fishing one just isn't as similar to one as we'd like it to be when we're trying to learn them.

A lot of times when I'm fishing ponds, I'll have a fish that strikes a lure but I miss it, I'll go back through that area of the water swimming a jig and put a fish on. I also will fish a 1/4 oz flipping jig on the bottom like I would a football jig... Slow and easy.

I say this just to rib you but stop you’re whining, lol. I say this because until you’ve been in my shoes, you’ll gain a whole new perspective. 
 

So you’ve gone a whole year and never ever caught a bass on a jig. 
 

I have gone 16 years this year and have never ever caught a bass on a bass jig (pig). I think this is a world record. I am not proud of it but it’s true. 
 

jig and plastic like a worm? Yes! But not the traditional rubber/silicone that we all call the the bass jig. 
 

So I know what you’re going through. Trust.  What I have learned is the bass in the lakes I fish don’t care for the jig and pig, not matter how many times I’ve tried. I don’t worry about it anymore, that’s for sure because they seem more willing to bite other lures. 
 

The drop shot, a senko, and in-line spinner, a crankbait, a rattle trap, whatever else. I just stopped fighting it and learned to give them what they want instead of trying to catch them on what I want to catch them with. Major difference. Huge difference, even if it means eating humble and hurting my pride, lol. 
 

Therefore, you have 15 years to go jigless before can say you have a right to whine like I do, lol.

I'd rather catch fish than try to force a bite . Use it a bit to satisfy your yen then get back to catching bass . Lots of lures I havent caught bass on and I dont care .

Don't be hard on yourself.  While I have caught bass on jigs, no one could accuse me of being a jig fisherman.  I know they work, but it's just not a confidence lure for me.  I'm going to try to give them more of a fair try this year, but I'm hoping to spend more time on the St. Lawrence and that means drop shotting.

Congrats! I was in the same boat as you until Saturday (pun intended). I got my first jig bass too! The jig seems to be a confidence lure for so many bass fishermen, and I haven't been able to figure it out. I don't pretend to have it figured out, but there is some satisfaction in catching one on a new lure, right?
