Throughout the years I have caught many fish that have surprised me. For example I have caught sawfish while shark fishing. These are rare fish that most will never see in person so it was a awesome experience.

That’s so cool! Would love to see a saw fish. That’s a very rare catch

I wasn't in a tournament, just pond fishing. Throwing a 168 S Waver in Bone color when this sucker flew up off the bottom and T-boned it. I'd have never believed it actually bit if I didn't watch it go down. My buddy got a cellphone video of the fight but I'm not smart enough to figure out how to get it on here.

Awesome grass carp. Would love to catch one. I’ve caught mirrors and commons. Nothing big.

Lots of things over the years. Catfish, bowfin,carp,mudpuppies,gar,mussels.... Last week I got my butt kicked by a big Flathead. It hammered my T-rigged beaver and ran back into the tangle of blowdowns I was fishing. I had the drag locked down on my Lews super duty, loaded with 40# 832, and it didn't even slow it down. I clamped down on the spool with my thumb but had to let off as it was about to snap my flippin stick. SLX 7' 10" heavy. Bent the reel handle, braid burned my thumb, nearly snapped a stout rod, and that beast ran back into the tangle and wrapped me up in probably 5 seconds flat. After about 20min of messing with it I gave up and broke it off.

That big cat KO'd me and my gear early in the first round. LOL. Fun experience though.

Great read. Those cat fish fight pretty hard.

I'm a big fan of 'Crazy By-Catches' ~

Especially when they start creeping into the 'Plus' size category.

These fish were sure fun to catch . . . .

(and all on video)

After a summer of monsoon floods - actually the day they dropped dam release to search for a missing canoe'er.

5-wt glass rod and Hardy Bougle, swinging streamers to check for holdover rainbows, instead landed two stripers - it was manly sport.

came back later into the fall, targeted and harvested 5 more stripers - with the correct gear

I snagged a grass carp not quite that big a couple weeks ago at my in-laws pond using a Red Eye Shad.  Hooked it in the meaty part of the tail.  Fought it for about 15 minutes as every time it got close to the dock it would make a bee-line back to the middle of the pond stripping out drag.  Finally got it tired enough for my wife to take a swiped at it with the net and she missed and hit my lure instead, dislodging it causing the fish to get off.  I have a video of the whole thing though.

Thanks ~

Lake Menderchuck is fairly fertile.

Did not weigh any of these fish and the only one I actually got a length on was the Musky which was 48".

And for your viewing pleasure . . .

Dont need a hook for gar.   Just take 4 or 5 inches of cotton rope.  Unravel it and tie it on.  The threads wrap up in the gar's teeth.  Never lose them that way.  As a kid, used to catch them like that in the Ouachita river in Louisiana.  Some were 6 and 7 feet long.

You can have ours ?

Lost one of my favorite out-of-production crankbaits to a five footer that broke off from 10# flouro on a spinning rod when I tried to beach it between my boat and the bank.

Wasn't the first lure I've lost to gar, and it won't be the last.

It's weird how their range just stops at New England.  I have them all over the place, but there aren't any downstate, closer to New York City.

I’ve had a catfish explode on a crankbait sitting on the surface and I’ve caught nice brook trout using a shad rap 05.

a lot of funny stuff going on in the photo below lol. I am in the green hoodie with my first treble hook in my finger thus not holding the fish. Mask as a chin diaper cuz yanno, COVID. And that random guy is lipping a brook trout. I dunno know man, I dunno know. Probably my most comical fishing photo. I darkened the other guy’s face for his privacy.

Are you referring to alligator gar or another species of gar like longnose/shortnose?

I'm about 95% sure I had one explode on a frog this morning. It was bright yellow and I didn't see any big scales like a carp. Had that overaggressive catfish thrashing to it also. I've had lots of channels try to eat my frog, a few successfully, but I'm pretty sure this was the first time a bully has tried. I wish he would have got it, I haven't caught a bullhead in years.

I filmed an episode of KT Diaries on Texas endemic bass.

Same episode, KT visited the state hatchery and eyed alligator gar in one of their ponds.

Not being able to resist, the kid in him grabbed his 5-wt fly rod, a clauser, and filmed hooking up three 100-150-lb'ers.

Of course he landed none of them, and intentionally broke off the one that didn't break off by itself.

But it made a great intermission in the bass fishing.

Me showing how to prospect a chute. trolling a Teeny sinking line in the current seam.

That’s incredible. Must of been so much fun.  I did that with 20-30lb king salmon in a river and a 6 weight. Only landed one but the fight was awesome. Didn’t break them off just pulled the hook
