Had not fished in 15 years...Heard all the great things about Fluorocarbon, spooled it on one my favorite rods...hated it.  Line twist, line memory, birds-nests, pain in the arse...much preferred my old faithful Trilene XL.

I want to give Fluorocarbon another shot.

What would you suggest for manufacturer and line weight.

Will be on my Senko/Slug-Go/Houdini Shad rod:

  • Cabela's XML-Ti | 6-6" | medium | 6-12lb | 1/4-5/8oz
  • Shimano Nexave 2500HG

What brand/type was it? There are some out there that are absolutely horrendous and turned me off to FC for a while.

Anything Seaguar - they invented it after all.

InvizX is a good one that's fairly inexpensive compared to others.

Tatsu is the top - BPS sale has Tatsu on sale for 25% off

Line-test - depends on what you plan on using it for - but 8# would be a good all-around.

I would use light braid.

but 8lb flouro would be something I’d try.  I don’t know if it works, but I spray my flouro-line with that line dressing.   Occasionally if I remember.  Makes me feel better and seems to help line memory.

Oh, I'm diligent about using KVD on everything except braid. Mono, FC, Hybrid - light soaking when I first spool up at the beginning of the year, touch up spritzes the night before...every time.

Seaguar and Sunline are the 2 manufacturers to consider.
Their flouro product lines are varied and tried and true.

There are others of course which are cheaper but like a lot of things you get what you pay for.

My advice is to use a quality product and not let price alone be the deciding factor.

For your setup and intended application, I would suggest you don’t - and this coming from a big fluoro fan. However, I’d go braid or mono in your case. Either of the other two will handle better, and allow you to bump up in line size a bit, which would be a good thing IMO. Part of the deal with fluoro is knowing when it makes sense to use it. That is a majority of the baitcast applications you could imagine, along with a few light line spinning applications. Just my .02 - but if you move forward with it anyway, go InvizX or Tatsu for their better handling characteristics.

I hated it, too. I was persuaded to try it again recently. I like it on casting reels. I don't like it on spinning reels. If that's the way you finally decide, you're not alone.            jj

I use fluorocarbon on 8 spinning setups.  I use Seaguar in 6, 8, and 10 pound test on reel sizes 1000, 2000, and 2500.  10 is the biggest that I have been able to use.  I don’t spray or treat it with anything.

I use Seaguar Red Label 12lb. Reviews do mention it's fairly stiff. I only use baitcasters, and don't find it's stiffness a problem. I don't use line conditioner, but it's definitely stiffer than my choices of mono (Stren 14lb and Trilene XL 14lb). I just like the line, and find it strong and reliable.

Seaguar Tatsu is known to be more manageable. I should give this line a try myself.

I think it was Trilene 100% Fluro, 12 lb test, maybe 10 lb

I run 6 lb and 8 lb Trilene XL on my other spinning rods. Love it.

Appreciate all the advice!

12# I'd never run on anything less than a 3000 size spinner

10# is pushing it for a 2500

Ya - XL is a good mono line - I used it for years myself. I've moved to Sufix Elite and Sufix Advance for my mono lines now.

I do have one spinning rod spooled with light braid.

I have 12lb Berkeley floro on a bait cast with 7’ M fast rod and I really like it. Took a lot of getting used to. It’s T rig setup.
I also had a lot of bird nest trouble at first, but I feel it was more casting on the medium rod. I prefer 6’6” Mh braid for anything else baitcast.  And casting into the slightest breeze is...difficult for me with the floro.

Agree with everything.

You're going to be disappointed but it's not going to really be any fault of the line.

Trilene XL is decent line. My line of choice, last few seasons, few spinning setup I use the hardest, has been SUNLINE SuperMono. Best mono line I stumbled upon. For the most part have only used Trilene and Stren my whole life.

I don’t buy my line by the packs. Buy it by the bulk spools. Having a hard time it in the bulk spools.

I’ve been using some McCoy copolymer also with good results.

I have around a half dozen setups similar to yours and they all have either 6# Invisx or Tatsu on them.

It works for me, and has for many years.

I went through several brands of FC and decided it just wasn't for me.  I settled on a copoly (Yo-Zuri Hybrid) instead for the few applications that I really wanted FC line for.  Seaguar and Sunline were definitely the best, but they all suffered from the line memory that I just couldn't get past.  I'd like them for a little while, but then run into issues after a month or two.  KVD L&L helped, but not enough.  These days, I only use pure FC line for leaders.  The copoly lines are a bit stretchy, which I don't like.  But I can deal with that.  And they still have line memory, but not as bad as pure FC.

Everyone's different though.  And I do miss the slackline sensitivity.  But I won't miss the bird's nests or the constant applications of line conditioner.

Can you describe what you mean by "line memory" in a little more detail?  My experience has been that fluorocarbon line retains very little memory of the spool it was coiled on, which is just the opposite of popular copolymer lines like P-Line CXX or Yo-Zuri Hybrid.  I find it even more imperative to use line conditioner on those to mitigate the coils that are inevitable after just a few days of sitting.  The coiling, or line memory, is one of the things most often complained about with old school mono and copolymer lines.  Or are you saying fluorocarbon doesn't have enough memory?  I can agree with that, especially with some of the stiffer fluoro lines.
