I’m going to switch all my line over to start the season off with straight mono. I’ve been fishing the same spots for years and 2 years ago since I switched to Braid/ Fluro Leader or straight Fluro, I’ve caught less fish. The waters could be less filled or overfished, but it’s pretty consistent.  I’ll set up the spinning with 6-8lb test mono that’s an easy decision, but I don’t think I’ve ever used anything but braid on my bait caster. I imagine I should run it with a braid backing to avoid slip and use atleast 12lb test? Any opinions here on my situation. I want to be able to manage the baitcaster, avg catch is 2-5 lbs. Lots of clear water, fishing from the bank at reservoirs, lakes and ponds. Usually very shallow. Primarily throw worms, flukes, some TRigs, cranks, wp and chatter.

I prefer to choose my line by size and not "pound test". I like to stay right around .014" or about .34-.36mm depending on how they label it. That would just be for general "all around" fishing.

EDIT* I should have added, right now I am using Sufix Elite in 12lb which comes in at .014" but I have also used Sunline Super Natural in 16lb which is .013"

I tried same thing and change everything to mono for few reasons, but honestly it dad bad impact to my performance, when I again back to braid with leader, again I start catching like before, so I highly recommend not to do it.

12 is good for about anything on baitcaster. 15 or 20 for the jig in thick branches

I have been playing with 10lb big game and 14lb BPS tourney tough I had lying around. Just practicing pitching inside the house, but tried a hook set at 25ft and it seemed fine. Always used braid, this will be my first season with mono. No reason really just trying something new (old). I like the leader knot issue not going through the guides idea. Still braid to leader on spinning though.

I have 10 lb Berkeley Big Game and 12 lb YZH on baitcasters and 6 lb or 8 lb Berkeley XL on spinning reels.

Send all your braid and floro to me.  I doubt using floro has affected your catch rate.

Punching weed mats is the only time I use braid.  The other reels all have mono on them.

Remember when Denny Brauer used 40 lb mono.  That’s all there was.

30....... fat fingers

I saw him speak at a Bassmaster University event in 2002 or so. He was asked what line he used for jigs.  He said "It's this new stuff they just came out with" and guys started writing feverishly "20 pound Stren in the purple box." Nice guy.

I highly doubt the line is the reason for your decline in catch rate. Mono is used as backing to keep braid from slipping, not visa versa.

I do use my kids ugly stick occasionally. He’s using straight mono, always seem to be a money stick. Who knows, going to try and go from there. Curious about the performance and management of the bc without braid. Sounds like more headaches managing it.

If you mean you think having mono on a baitcaster will be a headache, don’t worry. As I said, I have baitcasters spooled with 10 lb Berkeley Big Game and 12 lb YZH and you can’t get any simpler than that. I do use KVD on the YZH but find it unnecessary on the BG. Easy to cast, great knot strength, it’s simplicity defined. And no need for backing, especially with braid as backing.

another vote for Sufix Siege in smoke green. love the stuff. with a palomar knot you can't break it.

I use 10 on my 3000 size shimano spinning rig and 12 on my baitcasting rig.

I have switched from braid to mono too.
My catch rate hasn’t gotten worse, hasn’t got any better ether.
I don’t miss the noise that it made on a cast, leaders, or the cost.
But I’m glad I made the switch.

Braid has it’s advantages; high strength to diameter ratio, cuts through aquatic vegetation, very light weight.

Fluorocarbon has it’s advantages; heavier then water, very low coefficient of drag going through water, longer shelf life and temperature range then mono.

Mono including copolymer mono has advantages; lighter weight then FC, higher abrasion resistance then both FC and braid, higher knot strength per diameter then FC, lower cost per yard then both braid and FC.

I can’t see any use for braid main line with FC leader do to poor knot strength, however the combo is very popular.

I use copolymer mono, FC and braid as main lines where they have an advantage. No one line type is a panacea, mono is the most universal line.
