DaubsNU1 Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Currently running a Minn Kota 40lb 12v bow mount trolling motor. It's a 20 year old unit, works well. Single marine duty battery powers trolling motor and my bilge. I am adding a Garmin ECHOMAP™ UHD 73sv up front, and a Garmin Striker 4 back by the outboard. Will probably add a control panel/fuses and possibly some LED lighting(?) Do I need a second battery? Or will that one batter be able to fish all day? Quote
Russ E Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 If the fish finder and trolling motor are on the same battery, you may get a lot of interference. Especially with an older motor. Plus if it is not a deep cycle battery, chances are the battery will not last long if you are fighting wind with the trolling motor. Generally it is best to have a dedicated deep cycle trolling motor battery and another for everything else. 1 1 Quote

I will probably add an on-board charger as well. Quote

Like what said above you’ll get interference on the FF if on the same battery. I suggest you go with 100 AH battery if size allows. If not go with the largest that will fit and you’ll be good all day on the water. Good luck. 1 Quote

I'll get another and find a place to mount it, probably under the front casting deck. Appreciate the advice. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted February 23, 2021 Super User Posted February 23, 2021 If you attempt to use one battery for your sonar AND your trolling motor, there's a good chance that whenever you turn on your trolling motor, the sudden draw of power will give your sonar fits. It did mine, anyway. You'll want a dedicated deep cycle battery for just your sonar. It does not have to be particularly large, however-just make sure you charge it back up at the end of the day. Your trolling motor will require more battery than your sonar. 1 Quote

Use the trolling motor with a deep cycle and the electronics and LED lighting with a cranking or dual purpose battery. 1 Quote

On most bass boats, including mine, a standard starter battery runs all of the electronics and livewell, plus starts the outboard. The trolling motor runs off of different power. in my case it is 2 12 volt batteries hooked in series to create 24 volts. in your case one deep cycle for the trolling motor and a standard marine battery for the electronics should be fine. the reply you received stating you need 2 new batteries is not true, unless you hook them together. Whenever 2 batteries are connected together, whether in series for 24 volts or parallel for 12 volts they should be the same age. in your case that is irrelevant. 1 1 Quote

When I posted about both batteries being the same age, I didn’t know they weren’t going to be running parallel. I should have read your later post about putting it in the front of the boat. ? 1 Quote
K1500 Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 I don’t think you will be running your batteries in series or parallel. You need one for the TM and one for the electronics. If you run them in parallel, you will still have the possibility of interference issues. You only need two of the same age and capacity batteries of you are connecting them. If they are isolated from one another, age and capacity doesn’t matter. You can probably get by with a smaller and cheaper battery for electronics. As was already mentioned, on a bass boat the same battery runs the bilge, electronics, and starts the main motor. Quote
