Dobyn's Fury or Lew's KVD

Hi, all. I'm fairly new and fairly lousy at fishing. I have one casting setup, a Dobyn's Colt MHF with an SLX reel. I'm looking to add another setup for my kayak and maybe something that can handle a little more lure weight. I've read a lot about the Fury line and am looking at adding the 704. But then I saw the new KVD line from Lew's and there's a MHF in the lineup that's rated for 1/4-2 oz. That seems like quite a range of weight. Is there any feedback on these, yet?

Agreed. The dobyns will definitely by higher quality than the lews kvd. Not to say that the lews isn't a good rod, will just definitely get better bang for your dollar.

Not knocking Dobyn's but did you look at St. Croix's Mojo Bass series?

It's $20 more. I can stretch my budget for that.

There's a St. Croix Mojo Yak series out. 13 has a new Yak Series Omen Black 3. There are others. They key feature is shorter handles. Worth a look.

I hated the Bass X, that was the worst rod I've felt in my hands before. I returned it right away. I've never used the Mojo but it has to be way better than a Bass X.

I've used multiple Dobyns rod models, I'd go with Fury 734 for a good overall rod on a budget.

I preferred the Mojo Bass over the Dobyn's 703C Fury myself.  IMO the Mojo was much more sensitive than the Dobyn's for only $ 20.00 more.   I do not have any experience with the Bass X to comment.

the fury has really great reviews. I handled one and was very impressed. will be adding them to my arsenal soon

I have 2 Fury's, one for frogs and one for swimbaits. They're great for that but I wouldn't want one for a bottom contact rod.

If you like the dobyns, stick with it, upgrading to a fury from a colt, is a world of difference and I think it'll make you enjoy dobyns rods even more. Now if you haven't been a fan of dobyns, switching to lews may not be a bad idea.

I use the same rod/reel combo for jigs, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits...it's all good.

Get a Dobyns Fury and pair it with a Lews KVD reel. I'm not just talking out my rear, either; I did this exact thing 3x this winter.

A 4 power will cover 3/8oz chatterbaits and jigs + trailer really well.

Lew's TP1 Black rods are great rods for the price. (this one is the 7'2" med-heavy)

 

Most of my rods are on the higher end, yet last year I found myself grabbing this rod quite a bit. My dedicated swim jig rod is a Megabass Orochi. There were a few outings last year where I also had a swim jig tied onto this rod. I found myself reaching for the TP1 more than the Orochi believe it or not. It just feels so good. The action, down to the Winn Grips. Now I'm not saying it's a better rod than the Orochi, but I REALLY like it.

 

It retails for $10 more the Fury (which is also a nice option at that price point). But Sportsman's Warehouse sells them for $105...when they get them back in stock. 

 

I decided to pair the new KVD reel with it for this upcoming year.

Sorry but Dobyns is one rod i don't like anything about...period!

 

I would buy Academy's H2O before a Dobyns 

 

The Lew's KVD has EVA grips, you can't run fast enough to give me EVA.

 

I have 2 TP-1 Black Series, TP1B70MH & TP1B74H, the Winn Grips are a bonus.

 

Another option is a Powell Diesel 723 CEF for $89.99

+1 ... The St. Croix MoJo Bass rod I handled in a MH was on the stiffer side of a MH and not what I was looking for - happy I went with the Dobyns 734c. (Sierra) as my first decent bass casting rod .

there is a local shop here in PA who sells alot of rods ect, he was saying the Bass X did not sell and did not carry that model  anymore.

The Mojo Bass is a much better rod than the Bass X.  The rod blank is SCIII which is like the AVID.  I tried the Dobyn's Fury and was not at all impressed.  It reminded me of the Bass X.  In all fairness I haven't tried any of the higher end Dobyn's and probably will not as I live in St. Croix territory.
