I am getting really disappointed with cable TV these days. Besides the lack of shows for all the channels, I have pretty much lost all HD channels. I simply can't justify paying the money I'm paying for lousy reception. My package has landline phone, cable tv and internet. Just need the internet.

This has been brewing for quite a while now but I think it's time to go the stream route. Anyone have suggestions?

Look into YouTube TV. For 65 a month I get all local channels and everything else I used to pay 130 a month for on Directv.

It's all HD, unlimited DVR space and all you need is a Roku or Amazon steaming stick for your TV.

I'm a huge college football fan and I didn't miss a single game last year- they were all included.

I canceled my service a couple years ago and don’t miss it at all. I am outside of a digital broadcast area but can stream free local news stations. I use alternate between a few streaming sources like Netflix and Hulu but on the cheapest plans and never more than one service at a time. My biggest expense is when I use Netflix for $8.99 a month. There are tons of free content like Pluto and peacock that we use.

Cable and satellite tv is a dead technology in my mind.

Wife and I 'cut the cable' ten years ago. Since transferring the home phone number to her cell-phone, we even cut that landline. Only thing we have left is internet.

We don't miss it. Can get things online or through Netflix easy enough. We even have Amazon Prime for streaming their content. Plenty out there without paying through the nose for sub-standard content.

got rid of cable a year and a half ago.

I have Youtube tv, but debating getting rid of it because the price keeps going up.

1.5 years ago it was $59.99 with the Starz package. That same package now cost  $80.00.

I originally bought Youtube tv for the DVR.

I have 4k firesticks. With that there are a lot of free streaming services. Plus a few low cost services.

I currently have:

HBOMAX. it comes with my  At&T Phone package. Firestick has an app

Netflix I think it cost $9.99 a month

Hulu It cost around $11.00 a month.

Prime video. it comes with an amazon prime account

IMDB. free

Tubi  Free

Crackle  free

Pluto tv  free

Xumo tv  free

Youtube . firestick has an app to watch it from tv.

plus I have power booster antennas on all tv's. There are 40 local channels available.

even with all of the different streaming services,  I still pay around $100.00 less than my cable would cost.

We've lived in our house for almost 7 years and we've never had cable. Netflix,Hulu and prime are what we pay for. Otherwise I watch alot of YouTube guys.... Randy Blaukat, Jeremy Siers (whiskey reviews and EDC videos) and Debos Fishing (Iowa guy like me).

There is a reason that the major cable companies made a move 15 plus years ago to be internet service providers.  They knew that the physical cable coming into your house would no longer be needed to get TV reception, but rather internet service.  If you think it through, the only reason we ever had cable TV was because of the distance limits of terrestrial broadcasting.  Cable TV & DSS were a couple decade stop gap between terrestrial broadcasting and broadband internet service.

There are two reasons why you may NOT want to dump cable or DSS service:

1) You are in an area where you have limited or spotty internet service.  In that case, you are just trading one problem (cost) for another (consistent service);

2) You are over 45 years old and are the type of person who mainly uses your smart phone to take pictures of the fish you catch.  I joke, but some people struggle with technology and the concept of turning on a TV & then having to open an app in order to watch a show is foreign to them.

I still have it. Well, I actually have satellite through Direct TV. The primary reason is that I bundle with high speed internet and I like the channel lineup and live sports. Live sports often get choppy and slowed down if you stream them. I don’t pay a whole lot more than some of the prices already listed on here, and as some have mentioned the cost appears to be going up no matter who you’re using.

I’ve had it for 9 years now and when they try to raise the price, I call to complain. Then the price goes down again. I like watching NFL Sunday Ticket and I haven’t paid for that in about 6 years now either.

We have DISH and I want to get rid of it, but we just can't get internet service that can keep up enough. We are on our 4th different service provider and none of them have ever been able to run a program that uses a streaming service with everything else that is connected to them. We have 5 Smart TV's, 2 printers, 6 Cell Phones, 2 PS 4's and 4 laptops that all need to be connected. Even when most of those are not in use it is very inconsistent while trying to watch anything. Not only that, but most of them have monthly limits and we can blow through that pretty quickly. We are on a 100gb a month plan right now and we use that up in about 20 days. Of course, I do try to watch MLF and BASS on my laptop so I know I use a lot while doing that. I have tried exterior antennas but I am in a valley and surrounded by trees and the "local" stations are about 65 miles away and I can't get reception to them. I just can't bite the bullet yet and get rid of it.

I want to get rid of Dish, but we only pay around $110/month (granted there are only about 4-5 channels we watch). We just use our phones for internet so if we cut Dish we’d need to get internet which is around $60/month then find what we want for streaming services. I am quite sick of paying all that money to watch just 4 or 5 channels and 3/4 the time there isn’t ? on those channels. I could watch YouTube and be content.

Question: Do you need a smart TV to use streaming services? We don’t have a smart TV but it’s an updated TV that’s only 2 years old.

You can get a Roku, Firestick, etc that just plug into your HDMI and use one of those.

I'm the technophobe described above.  I used to be able to watch my Warriors play almost every game.  Then my wife changed plans and I can only watch game highlights on YouTube.  We also got the fiber optic upgrade, (upgrade my arse), and have slow loading issues.  I have to constantly reboot to get to speed.  And it's still too expensive.  Remember when TV was free?

Well, then you are just an old dinosaur and should just burn your money, or pay,  without questioning the multinational conglomerates.  They need money too.

I used to wish we could get cable. But now listening to you guys I’m glad we can’t. The joys of living in the country. Then again I wouldn’t change it for the world.

This is where I fall kind of. My surround sound is antiquated and I would have to invest money into a receiver that is not 30 years old. Trivial...I know.

I don't like to look for stuff. I just like it to be there.

I have a Firestick at work and when it gets slow, I watch Love Boat and Three's Company on Pluto TV because I'm over 45 and I don't want to open apps....

If you ever get a millennial in the same room as a rotary phone, ask them to figure out how to dial a phone number.  They struggle with it the same way the older generation struggles with smartphones.

As JBSooner said, any streaming device (Roku, Firestick, AppleTV) will turn your "dumb" TV into a Smart TV.

Also, all but the cheapest Blu-ray players also have internet access, and since they play all discs (CD, DVD & Blu-ray), if you still use discs and are looking for a new player, it kills 2 birds with one stone.

My brother-in-law did this to my niece. He downloaded an app of a rotary phone and told her if she could figure out how to dial a phone number she could have the phone. She didn't get the phone.
