clh121787 Posted February 21, 2021 Posted February 21, 2021 My neighbors pond was completely choked out from duckweed. Is there any chance this recent freeze will completely wipe it out? This pond has been an ice skating rink the past 5 days during this record cold. I hope it wipes out the duck weed. 1 Quote
M Bruns Posted February 21, 2021 Posted February 21, 2021 It freezes up here all the time. Duckweed still comes back. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 21, 2021 Super User Posted February 21, 2021 My hope is the cold knocks it back cause I don't want it completely gone. I love fishing grass ? Quote
ironbjorn Posted February 21, 2021 Posted February 21, 2021 Contrary to popular belief, our northern water can be every bit as heavily vegetated as southern water. And let me tell you, the weeds still come back every year, sometimes heavier than before. The fairy wand idea people have of the north stems from the Greak Lakes smallmouth fishing primarily. 1 Quote

I can tell you that even here in MN, weeds can choke parts of large lakes and even completely cover small lakes. Four months of ice-cover does nothing to stop it. A week or two down there isn't going to affect it much. 1 Quote
clh121787 Posted February 21, 2021 Author Posted February 21, 2021 This duck weed isn’t your typical Aquatic vegetation. It covers the entire surface. Blocking all sunlight to the pond and kills all the grass and all the fish. It’s a death wish for small ponds. Quote

Duckweed removes excess nitrogen and phosphates, provides shade and habitat for small fish and fry, can reduce evaporation, limits photoautotrophic algae growth and can help reduce mosquito larvae numbers. It’s also good forage for ducks. The pond I fish is riddled with duckweed in summer. It can be a pain as it gets on baits and line (even staining clear line), but it hasn’t hurt the bass fishing one bit. Quote
clh121787 Posted March 15, 2021 Author Posted March 15, 2021 If it covers the entire surface of a small pond for extended amount of time it’s done. Aquatic grass needs sun. Bass eggs need sun. Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 Up Here in MA. There’s ponds I can’t fish in the summer. To choked with weeds! Quote
