21qdodge Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I want to start getting into swimbait and glide bait fishing and will probably throw lures in the 1-5 ounce range. And maybe an A rig or two. I thought about getting the irod genesis 3 junior swim, Daiwa dx swimbait rod, and the dobyns fury 795 sb. Any suggestions? I don’t want to spend over 150. Quote
freelancer27 Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 In this price range you would need to stick with the Daiwa DX. Dobyns rods are very missleading in their lure rating. To throw a 5 ounce lure comfortably you would need to go to a 806/807 in my opinion. Check Sportmanoutfitters. They had a 20% off on Dobyns if I recall correctly. Quote

I picked up a Dobyns Fury 795 SB and intend to use it for A-rigs and to throw smaller swimbaits like the Gantarel Jr and the S Waver 168s - generally in the 1-5/8 oz range. Consensus from what I've read is this is a fine rod up to say 2.5-3 oz. Check out the review by TackleTour guys: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewdobynsfuryswimbaitrodpg3.html Though rated up to 5oz. I found the sweet spot with this rod to be right around 2-3 ounces, and while you can certainly lob cast 6oz. baits with the Fury 795SB, it does start to feel like you are starting to tempt fate. This is consistent with opinions I have read on Dobyns Facebook page in discussions regarding this rod. Admittedly so far I have only used it to cast 3-arm A-rigs and to cast/swim Zman paddletails rigged in the 1-1/2 oz range and it was awesome for that. (Don't have first hand experience with the hardbaits yet). Quote
Emiliano Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I use Dobyns Fury 795SB but as mentioned above, if you want to throw 5oz baits better step up to the 806 HSB Sorry but for power fishing I'm a Dobyns fan, Fury series it's a great rod for what you pay IMO Quote

Revival Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 I am also new to glides and just got in the Irod Genesis 3 Swimbait Jr today, and looks and feels amazing. It’s surprising light for a swimbait rod. I was expecting a broomstick. Rated 1-4oz. We’ll see how it fishes but I am extremely happy with my choice. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted February 19, 2021 Super User Posted February 19, 2021 Irod makes some really nice swimbait rods. Check em out on TW. The Genesis III is right in your price range. 1 Quote
21qdodge Posted February 19, 2021 Author Posted February 19, 2021 Yeah the Irod has great reviews I think I’ll go with them thank you guys Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted February 19, 2021 Super User Posted February 19, 2021 The Daiwa DX SB have worked great for me for 4 years. I own and one of each power/action. The Med/Heavy is rated from 1-6 ounces but over 4 ounces I'll use the Heavy. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 19, 2021 Super User Posted February 19, 2021 Suggest IROD gen3 Heavy for lures to 4 oz. Tom Quote
Trzzy Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 I have both a Dobyns 806 fury and IRod Gen 2 Jr swim THe IRods a great stick I throw baits safely up to about 3oz. Anything over I use my Dobyns setup. The IRod is way lighter. I prefer it for my glides and most of my baits. Both are great rods for the money. You can’t go wrong with either Quote
