Come on back!! So you’ve got coal dust in your lungs too??

We always poke fun at the state of Kentucky but it is quite lovely as far as scenery and definitely has a nice cold winter to remind you of home. It also doesn’t have much human activity, The guys that live there might be trying to keep it a secret Haha. You can probably get a lot nicer house and way more land for your money there

Both grampaw's left elementary school to dig coal, so you could say that I do have coal dust in my lungs.

Prices are obnoxiously high in TN right now, that's for sure. I'd still be keeping my modest NH home for the summer and early fall. We grew up picking on Kentucky and West Virginia, but they both are good options. Just have to get the Yankee Mrs to stop trying to do the accent!

I hear ya ~

I can tell you that while I make posts about the cold & snow, truth is the only part that I really dis-like is not being able to fish over the winter.

The rest of it is "just Life".

In the service I moved 19 times in 28 years.  THAT was a PIA.

However I got to see some places and experience different deals - all be it all on the east coast.

What I took from that was every place we live has the good, the bad & the ugly.

We just need to decide what version of that we want to endure.

My decision as to where to retire to and live out the rest of my days had several layers to it.

Much of that revolves around my wife's health, which is not good.

We could have gone anywhere, literally.

Cost of living, availability of health care, and type of life style of the area, all came into play.  My fixed income goes a long way here.

In the end, much of what keeps many folks from settling in this area, is what I like most about it.  I prefer rural, small town deals, with no hurricanes, and very few people in general.

If there is a vehicle in front of me at one of the few stop lights here, we call that traffic.

Read that again.

Good Luck with your decision.

That was a powerful message indeed. I'm terribly sorry to hear about your wife's health...I've thoroughly enjoyed the videos of you and her taking the Old town canoe for a spin and wearing some green bass out! She gives the impression of a very strong lady.

I'm glad that you have found your home.

I too, am quite fond of the small town deals and the many attributes that come with it.

Hopefully, one day soon (housing market permitting) my fiancé and I can finally find a place to make our own.

No, I'm doing the opposite.  We're buying a summer/retirement home in Northern Michigan in another 5 years or so.  May to late October will be glorious.  While the weather is tough now, I don't enjoy the 100 degree stuff down south throughout the summer.  When I am retired I plan to take an extended Florida or Texas trip every February to shorten the winter.

I wouldn't move to that state if it was the only one not on fire!  It is an Ohio thing!  haha

I guess there is one thing that I love about living in the mid Atlantic, which is "being at the top of the food chain".  Other then fairly rare black bears, there is nothing in the woods or water around here that is going to be able to do more then bite a toe off.  It's always a bit jarring to travel somewhere else and have to remember that I need to pay attention so I don't get eaten.

I'm not doing tres any time soon.  Tranny is a bit easier on my 48 yo body, though I still hit some hand rails and banks.  I love a nice beat up parking block as well.

Forgot to mention that these things swim in ever ditch along the lake.  Another fun winter activity:

That's awesome! Being that I didn't have access to many skateparks growing up, flat ground and/or street skating was far more common around here. I was like a kid in a candy store when I got my license and had access to all of the parks with vert ramp opportunities! I could spend days at a time on a mini ramp. Check out the video called cheese and crackers with Daewon Song and Chris Haslam if you haven't already, I promise you won't regret it.

I use winter as a rest season and to redirect my energies to other things that get neglected by fishing.

I absolutely know what you mean! Come spring I'm NEVER home? That also translates to "i'll fix that later."

Moved to N.C from Buffalo,N.Y. in 1996...It's hot here in the summer. The Hurricanes are a pain, move your stuff inside...move it back out. Clean your yard. Once in a while you have a bad one like Florence. I live on the coast, so sand gets everywhere, even though I'm miles from the beach. You do have a chance of an encounter with gators and snakes when fishing, but it's not very often that they will be confrontational. The good...I pretty much fish year round! No shoveling snow! Not much in the way of road salt except on Interstate 40. Taxes are a lot friendlier than N.Y.

I get less tolerant of winter every year in the DC metro area. We spent a month in Sanibel, FL to do virtual work and school for our kids. Her family is in NJ, and mine is in MD. It's sad to say, but I think when our parents are no longer with us, we'll have a serious discussion about moving down there.

My fiancé and I spend quite a bit of time with her family, especially since they live less than 5 minutes away.

In all honesty, I fantasize about moving quite a bit but truly can't see how things would work considering how close we all are.

A few moments ago I asked her if she'd ever consider moving away. Her response was something like a 10% oh wow! wouldn't that be nice a 90% no way am I moving that far from my family.

I think there was a great white in the Chesapeake Bay a few summers ago, but one shark in 4500 square miles is something I can live with.  Even poisonous snakes are rare around here, I have seen a single copperhead in like 6-7 years of constant hiking/fishing and my friend who is a bio field researcher and an avid hiker only sees one every other year or so.

Moving back out west not soon enough.. Az.  Problem is when.  Now if it was just up to me... but thats not the case. I absolutely dread living in the Northeast. Every winter is like I'm wasting my life away. And yes I have things I do year round and I'm actually not always around here but thats irrelevant lol.

Wintertime blues are currently peaking at the moment...

This post would be a mile and a half long if I listed all of the things I despised about the cold weather.

I realize I sound like a pansy.

Here in Virginia, Winters aren't even that bad in comparison to many other states. I still hate them with a burning passion lol.

How do you northern folks deal with it? @A-Jay, @MN Fisher, @J Francho @Mbirdsley???

Moving to a warmer climate has been on my mind quite a bit lately.

Has anyone ever honestly considered moving south??

And If you were to move somewhere warmer, where would that be?

@BrianMDTX I remember reading a username explanation thread on here and you stated you made the journey south.  Please tell me you're loving February more than I am?

Funny... I've been thinking about moving to Virginia lol.

Cabin fever is real. The struggle is real.

I can tell you all heat ain't all that!  Summers here run 110-120 and fishing is early early morning to mid morning June - Sept.

I don't know why you VA folks complain, I lived in VA for 10 years around Herndon/Reston and Charlottesville and that was awesome. Winter was only a blink of the eye, spring and fall were gorgeous and summer was tolerable, especially if you were out fishing.

A Job brought me to AZ and I became a desert rat and can bass fish locally on a couple of reservoirs, but travel to do some real serious bass fishing.. My personal best was at Sugar Lake Mexico ( 10Lbs 8oz) ....  it is Lake Fork, TX this year and maybe Clear Lake CA in the fall.

I live in a fisherman's paradise with beautiful weather so I know how fortunate I am. Florida also has lots of natural beauty that most states do not have. For example there are no coral reefs in New York so I have no interest in living in that state or any other state without coral reefs.

Sanibel Island is one of the most beautiful places in the USA. It also has very good fishing.

We are moving to Texas when my wife retires. Our daughter and grand babies

are anxious to have us close. I am looking at Sherman, north of Dallas and about

thirty minutes from the kids. Looks like the closest big water is Texoma. Anyone

have anything to say about the town or lake?

I have lived in MN, ND, CA, NJ, and MI, and visited every state in the union at least once, except Hawaii (although some more than others). I don't really "enjoy" the winters here, but I don't mind it -- my part of MI has nothing on northern MN, at least. Having multiple other hobbies/interests goes a long way. I've never really been anywhere that I thought, "wow, living here would be better in every way". Every place I have been has advantages and disadvantages, and Michigan has negatives we're used to and can tolerate, all things considered. Maybe i'll change my mind in 15 years, but we're not planning on going anywhere.

Wow. The farthest I’ve ever moved is 1 county over. And unless something crazy happens, I believe that’s how it will remain

Technically I've only lived in 5 counties, and the moves were all school- and career-related. You get really sick of moving after doing it just a few times, though.

We are thinking of a last move. I love FL. But I know the wife won't love the heat. I think we may end up compromising and heading toward the SC coast.

I haven't been to Edisto. I'd like to. We spend a good bit of time around Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island. My sister has a place at Garden City and my nephews live in Murrells.
