dam0007 Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 Hey all I know this reel is geared towards the lighter spectrum of techniques. Just curious if anyone has used it for heavy flipping and punching? 3/4oz +? Froggin? Does it seem to hold up? HG vs XG any torque issues cranking on em? How does it handle 20lb Fluoro? thanks in advance can’t wait to see the feedback! Dave 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 18, 2021 Super User Posted February 18, 2021 I used mine for 1/2 oz jigs around timber with 15 lb tatsu and while I never caught anything over 3 lbs or so on it, it worked great. I have since switched it to a 3/16 oz Texas Rig because it handles it so well. I don't think you will have a problem. Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 18, 2021 Super User Posted February 18, 2021 Small in hand, light weight, & low line capacity mike it an excellent choice for the techniques you listed with the exception of frogging...not enough line capacity. 1 Quote
TBAG Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I have one but got it over the holidays and haven't even spooled it up yet. I am pairing mine with an 853c NRX and plan to use it for light texas rigs and jigs. Like someone else said, not enough line capacity for frogging IMO. 2 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 18, 2021 Super User Posted February 18, 2021 How big of a line when you fish frog? Curado 70 should be able to hole 40-50lb braid at least 100yds. I frog light cover and mostly open water so I only use 30lb braid and that is plenty enough. Quote

I'm no great distance caster, but I can get a frog out 120' or so (larger Livetarget ones I use). The problem won't be you run out of line, it will be that you're only bringing in 18" or so of line per handle turn at the end of the cast. Not so great for a frog reel. I don't have the MGL, but I really like the Curado 70 on the 2 rods I have it, though. 1 Quote

Have been frogging with the Tat SVs in 8:1 haven’t had capacity issues. Just got one of these in XG and not sure what to use it for. Digging a lot of the new Shimano stuff so have picked up a few different models. It’s prob gonna end up getting slapped on a flipping stick. Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 The SV Tatulas that I have don't have a ton more capacity than the Curado 70, so maybe this could be your frogging reel. I use a 8:1 Lews Tournament MB for my frogging reel, and it's still plenty fast, even if the frog gets swallowed at the end of my cast. As for the handle, on my Curado 70s, I replaced the handles with Metanium handles. Made a world of difference. Hope the 70 MGLs have bearings in the knobs and a little longer handle. Quote
dam0007 Posted February 19, 2021 Author Posted February 19, 2021 Funny you mentioned handles. I bought 2 lefty Curado Ks in 5.0:1 the minute I found out about them. But they have a 100mm handle with these massive knobs. So I ordered a pair of handles from the Curado K XG, 96mm wrong ones so ordered another set from the HG, 90mm. Yay! Lol so I have 2 extra handles actually 4 if you include the 100s. I like 90mm across the board personal preference. I’m not sure what size comes on the 70 it’s still in transit if I like it I’m ordering a second for a pair of flipping rods. But the handles are only $14 a pop from Shimano and I have tons of bearings to replace the bushings. There’s a review not sure if it was TT or a YouTube video but they were saying it’s only good up to like 3/8oz anything over go to the full size K. I ain’t buying it. There’s tons of guys using em for jigs and jig fishing ain’t much different then flipping repeated cast and hookset wise. ??♂️ Quote

I don't understand why you can't use a heavier bait either. I definitely have used heavier jigs than that with the Curado 70s, and I don't know of any reason you couldn't go even heavier. Some people just don't like the small body for palming, but I really like this reel. 1 Quote

Idk I beat the living hell out of my Tat and Zill SV reels all sorts of heavy duty fishing and they’re considered “finesse”. ??♂️ Really anxious to get this bad boy in d**n inclement weather ? Quote

Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 20, 2021 Super User Posted February 20, 2021 Yep, you will love it!!!! Quote
dam0007 Posted February 20, 2021 Author Posted February 20, 2021 Do you have the HG or XG? Curious if both have these 90mm handles. Knobs are kinda small I can swap those. But may grab HG models too I can’t get over how much I like this one. HG for slow rolling keitechs mmm mmm mmm Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 20, 2021 Super User Posted February 20, 2021 I have the XG. I changed out the knobs to the Power Grip II knobs. I have put those knobs on every reel I have. Quote
dam0007 Posted February 21, 2021 Author Posted February 21, 2021 This handle is 96mm actually. Different part number from the HG so I bet that one is 90mm. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 21, 2021 Super User Posted February 21, 2021 I would guess so as well. Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted February 21, 2021 Posted February 21, 2021 I just ordered one a couple days ago after doing quite a bit of research. Tackle Tour said it could handle bigger baits but it loses some of its smoothness and refinement when tasked with a heavier load. The real shines with baits under 1/2 oz. It received a great review from them overall. 1 Quote
Big Swimbait Posted February 22, 2021 Posted February 22, 2021 Could this reel be used on a light action rod to throw Ned rig stuff? Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 22, 2021 Super User Posted February 22, 2021 With the right line, I think it could. I don't know exactly how light you mean, some weights are better left to spinning reels any way. 3 Quote
Big Swimbait Posted February 22, 2021 Posted February 22, 2021 I was thinking 1/16. I have a couple of spinning rigs dedicated to the technique, but when I go to Fork or Rayburn I've had my butt handed to me a few too many times. Just looking for something with a little more power and control. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 22, 2021 Super User Posted February 22, 2021 Sounds like you are choosing the wrong technique for the cover. I let the area I am fishing determine my line and rod type more than anything. No sense in throwing a 1/16 oz ned rig on 6 lb line in a stump field trying to catch a 10 lber. 1 Quote

You are correct about the cover I am fishing, but not always. A grass line can be just as productive as the rough stuff. But my experience has repeated itself too many times that big fish will hit that bait. I understand the odds are against me but I am fishing for bites that I might not get at all and just want to give myself a better chance. Quote
