I got a Chronarch MGL XG. I have a Scorpion MGL XG as well. I'm trying to figure out how I can use both of them. It just so happens that my neighbor owns a Tackle Store and services Shimano reels. He says he can take out the gears, put new ones in and slow the Chronarch down virtually making into a 7 Speed. Has anybody heard of this?

How would you use 2 XG (8.1) reels? What techniques?

Almost any non chuck and wind bait - frogs, jigs, plastics, jerkbaits, topwaters, etc.

You can change gears and I have several times but never to slow the ratio down.  I only use 7 and 8 speed reels.

he just said he could slow down the gear ratio. Whatever that means.

Any presentation you move the lure with your rod gear ratio isn’t a factor until taking up slack line.

Your reels are size 100’s. IPT is more of a factor then gear ratio. If your normal casting distance is over 35-40 yards the spool looses about 40% IPT.

8.1:1 ratio vs 7:1 IPT @ 40 yards is about 2”.

Don't crank so fast! ?

Going to a slower gear ratio (like 8.1:1 to 7.1:1) in the same reel decreases the IPT (inches per turn).  IPT tells you more than gear ratio.  Not all 8.1:1 ( or any other ratio) reels retrieve at the same IPT.  And as Tom said, a 40 yard cast will not have the same IPT as a 15 yard cast from the same reel because of the differences in circumference where the top layer of line is sitting.

I've got several 8.1-9.1 ratio reels that I use for baits like bottom contact baits (t rig/jigs), pitching, frogging, and buzzbaits.

I use high gear ratio for bottom contact and top water.

I also use an 8 gear ratio reel for squarebills - and I catch a lot of fish on squarebills - probably the single most productive technique for me.

I have a couple of 8:1 reels and use them for things like throwing Shakey heads and texas rigs up to rocky ledges and slopes and any other situation where you might have to throw a line 30 or 40 yards when only the first 5 or 10 yards or so of retrieve matter. The higher retrieve makes it a small bit faster to get the lure back to the boat across the water between the boat and where the fish are.

The truth is that it's probably more psychological than anything because it probably only saves a handle rotation or two. I use 6:1 mostly and can't honestly say that if feels a whole lot different, just a little.

I whole heartedly agree with that, and if one can gain confidence using a particular item to put them in the right state of mind to be successful, then IMO it is worth it. Kind of like guys that buy a new driver that may or may not be better than their current one, if the confidence is there, their performance may increase.

TaylorMade makes a killing every quarter with this theory.

Yep, get DJ, Rory, Tiger, etc. using the new drivers and everyone thinks that will shave a few strokes off their game. Most people don't realize the game is usually played at less than 100 yards. More strokes are lost on the green than off the deck.

Sorry, this is not about golf. My bad. LOL

No problem, I decided to take your advice and put Chronarch on my Squarebill rod. Burn those squarebills through the junk!
