This has been discussed here and everywhere else but curious on an updated review.
ewg-said to be better when fish are eating the bait and kvd uses on everything (he says)

round bend- better when a fish is swiping at a bait example cold water jerkbaits.

now which one do you follow and why? Does it even matter really?

No

I use EWG on everything except 7" Senkos and Rage Thumpers.

So you think in cold water for largemouth it wouldn’t make a Difference if they are just swatting at it?

Round bend on everything. I go out of my way to either not buy lures with EWG trebles installed, or take the time to remove them and swap them out for round bends.

Round bend everywhere for trebles.

Round bend hooks have better hook up ratio than EWGs.

Whenever I find myself using an EWG out of necessity, I customize it with needlenose.

KVD sells hooks for a living

Funny you say that, because TacticalBassin, ones of the prestigious fishermen seems to adore EWG more as well and he doesn't have his own treble hooks brand. Does that mean they oversell Gamakatsu EWG or Owner ST-35? It is more unlikely.

In my experience, EWG Treble is harder to get hooked when the fish is very shy and especially in pressured water like major park ponds (where I always bank fish on). However, once it gets bit, the hookset is so violent, it can rip the fish mouth skin by 1/4" - it won't let go as easily. I believe that is why it is more favored when hooking a bigger fish. Bigger fish have stronger skin and the ewg hooks won't bend as easily (or at least will put much more effort making the tip angle outward).

Round bend is other way around - More hooksets, less guaranteed on sticking on the fish due to the hook angle.

With that said, there are treble hooks that are kind of hybrids, which looks like a round bend hook but the tip angle is little bit angled inward. KVD 2x short shank 1x strong is one example.

Round Bend ( O Shaunessey if possible) unless a EWG is required because of bait selection.

I do like some ewg for some short trebbles

Plus size short shank EWG trebles on everything for me, includes the dressed tail hook.  I go out of my way to either not buy lures with Round bend trebles installed, or take the time to remove and swap everyone out for short shank EWG's.

He also said that if you are throwing a round bend hook on a lipless, you are shooting yourself in the foot. I just don’t know why it would make that big of a dif?

I have certain hooks I like for specific baits.....

Curly tail worms and lizards > Owner offset shank wide gap

Senkos and other Texas Rigged plastic > Gamakatsu EWG

Fat Ika > Owner Wide Gap Plus

Recently I have been using the Gamakatsu nano finesse treble hooks when I need to replace stock and so far so good.  They are crazy sharp and can do some damage if you pull too hard.

I have never had issue with round bends, personally.

In one of their fall lipless fishing, they fish lipless in the morning, and that is when a school of bass is chasing baitfish. In their fishing context, those bass are fired up. Round bend may have a better hook up ratio in this case, but since the bass is so hyped they can shake off the hook easily, thus the advantage of EWG.

I never have had such situation, since I am doomed fishing from the bank in a city pond lmao.

I like both and fish certain lures with round bend but the majority are EWG.  I also know for a fact that A Jay prefers EWG because every bait I bought from him had fresh EWG hooks installed on them.

Aren't we talking about treble hooks, though?

Nevermind me, I spaced out.

But yeah, I generally like round bends, but EWG trebles work as well.

I've used EWG hooks for years.  Don't know why, I just always have.

For treble hooks I like the short EWG hooks on crankbaits. I do use round bend on suspending jerk baits. Short EWG hooks tend to get hung up on the bottom a lot less than round bend hooks.

if I’m replacing them, I go with gami or VMC round trebles.

Don't really care ?

Whatever comes on the lures stays, if I gotta change em I'm probably not buying that lure.

Except Texas Rigs or Jig-n-Craws then it's round bend period.

Exception #2 Senkos & flukes get EWG.
