Ok I have read it all... but still spinning my head. I have in Dobyns line a 734c Champion, 705c Sierra, 705CB Fury ,702sf Fury. All these Rod's are new to me as I just jumped on the Dobyns wagon 6 months ago or so.

As mentioned in another post I am replacing a couple rods and looking at new St. Croix, Shimano Zodius and now the 2 mentioned in title.

So 735c Champion lure rating 1/4 - 1 1/2 and rated Medium Heavy/XF applications Frogs, Pitchin' & Flippin', Small Swimbaits

735c Sierra lure rating lure rating 1/4 - 1 1/2 and rated Mag Heavy/XF applications Frogs, Pitchin' & Flippin', Small Swimbaits

Same length, same lure rating's, same applications, both are in the flip and pitch section on website, but different Power rating,, this is driving me nuts. I just don't get it.  I know the Sierra action is a little slower in general I can grasp that, but to have one a Medium Heavy and the other a Mag Heavy with same lure rating and application/category is just driving me insane looking at rod's. What am I missing cause already losing my mind.

Give Dobyns a call I'm sure they could tell you the differences. Not sure if you can get a hold of them during the current weather conditions or if they are currently open due to the Texas weather.

I own both of these rods.  The Sierra reel seat is an inch farther back on the reel.  It seems that the Sierra is slightly more stiff but that is just me applying some pressure on the floor.  Both felt the same weight-wise in my hand.  If you get any answers, please post.

More than likely the meium/heavy is a typo.

That rating often does not mean much, because every manufacturer has, their own interpretation. Dobyns run lighter than a lot of other

Dobyns designates the rod power and length in the part number.

A 735 is 7 foot 3inches long with a 5 power rating.

The champion and Sierra you mentioned have the same power.

The only difference is the champion is probably more responsive and sensitive, because it is a higher end rod

I understand there power ratings or what they are suppose to be thats why its confusing because if its a type-o , than its a type-o on every website.

I know it's pretty confusing, my guess is that it has to do with handle length. They can be both used for pitching & flipping as can other regular Mag-H Dobyns casting rods. In regular casting rods such as the Sierra 735c it doesn't go any heavier than a Mag-H, but if in their pitching & flipping rods where the handles are longer and the lure ratings I believe go higher, they have to call that one a MH to be able to call the others with higher lure ratings a H and Mag-H. But, that's just my guess, I didn't check the website to reference any of it.

It almost has me wanting to just go to the Champion 736.. I have some cover it will work with would allow me to throw some heavier presentations

Not sure what you’re reading, but calm down. It’s a MagHeavy the same as the fury and champion 735c rods

Go look at Tackle warehouse, it’s a MagHeavy

Dobyns has had a heck of a time trying to provide power ratings for their rods.  Dealers can’t just post the power and lure/line ratings.  Dealers do not have educated and knowledgeable staff with enough product experience to answer a customer question.  That is why you hear” call Dobyns directly” so often.

I can say that a 3 power is a medium power with a 3/8 oz. sweet spot.

A 4 power is a medium heavy with a 1/2 oz. sweet spot.

A 5 power is a heavy with a 5/8 oz. sweet spot.

A 6 power is a mag heavy with a 3/4 to 7/8 oz. sweet spot.

This is for the flag ship Champion series which features each of the powers.  Actions will differ between series.  When in doubt, call Dobyns.  They fish what they sell.

I got it, sorry. I have a Champion 705c and it is rated as a MagHeavy, I just figured the 753c would be too.

I own the champ 735. It’s a medium heavy in the flip model basically. It’s got the tip of a 4 power but the backbone of a 5. The mag heavy in the Sierra is exactly that. A mag heavy

And don’t do this unless it’s heavy heavy cover. I can pitch all the way up to 3/4 of an oz in some gnarly stuff with fluorocarbon

You have a 736 by chance?

I asked in the Dobyns Community on Facebook and even they don't really know. I had someone say it was a misprint, and someone say basically what myself and kingmotorboat was trying to explain. I would say that's about the best explanation so far, but if I get any better responses on there I will let you know. Gary Dobyns post on there, as well as other staff members, but right now Dobyns office is out of commission due to power outage.

By the way the Champion 705c MagHeavy is a great rod. Has lots of applications.

When in doubt go with the champ 735. It’s been pretty much the flagship rod and you can do any single hook presentation with honestly. That soft tip is something to behold

quite honestly Dobyns rods are very relative and the higher you go in price the better the quality and more true to performance. A 734 Colt is not the same as a 734 Champion.  Fury 735 is noticeably heavier than the Champion.

I got the Siera 735C Mag Heavy based solely on the recommendation of a few fellas on here.
I was looking for a dedicated frog rod at the time but now I throw buzz baits and paddle tail swim baits with it also.

I was a little surprised and honestly concerned that the action was a bit too soft from what I’ve been used to when I first got it, but it works just fine.

It’s passable for a 1/2 oz spinner and chatter bait also.

In a pinch it can double as a punch rig if I really needed it but I like a XF for that much better.

Hi @Mike L quick question. Isn’t the SA 735C an extra fast? I’m looking at this rod for single hook topwater and heavy Chatterbait. Sounds like this could be a good option but that extra fast has me worried. I don’t own any Dobyns. Are they typically rated a little higher/faster than other rod companies?

In my opinion it’s an excellent option for what you want, and I also use it for what you describe.
This is my first Dobyns rod so I really don’t know much about their entire line, but for me the 735C is definitely not an XF.

It’s a lot softer than my 2 XF rated rods I currently have ...7’1” Tatula and a 7’4 Smoke.

From what I’ve read the 735 is softer than a lot of others rated the same and I’ve found that to be true.

Do search on here about that rod as thier are a few from fellas in here who know a lot more about them and who’s advise I took.
