Setting Drag For Braid Test That Exceeds Rod Rating

I’ve searched prior posts on this subject and seen that exceeding rod’s specs is okay as long as you compensate with drag. Is this done by using the braid’s mono equivalent? As an example, with 50# braid the drag would be set at 2.5-3 pounds of drag.

the drag should be set at no higher than 1/4 of the rod's max line rating.

   Sounds about right.   ?

   I set my drag at a max of 4 lbs. I've never had to set it higher for bass. Pike or musky, yes, but not bass. And that is with a strong MH/F rod. Very few MH freshwater bass rods will endure lifting more than 4 pounds of dead weight.

   If I want more temporarily, I just use my thumb on the spool. You'd be surprised how much extra force you can generate with a little friction on the spool!

On my flipping stick with 50lb braid I lock it down at 20lbs. No problems yet.been that way since 20 lb drags came out. Bass Pro Johnny Morris Signature series deals with it well.

i keep my spinning reel drag with #30 braid tight and then loosen it as my senses tell me.
