Minnesota has lots of lakes not even developed that are a great escape from boats and crowds and they dont have boat ramps and are great for wader fishing. I grew up there...any never fished the red. Did a lot of fishing as a kid. ...okay outside of catching some golden eye by the dam and a few other super feeble attempts. Good fish in it near town? Quote

throttleplate Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 grew up myself fishing the red and all i caught were bullheads, carp, goldeneye, catfish and sheepshead. But i was a kid who used a rusted lug nut for a weight and strictly worms. I joined the military out of high school and said goodbye to the red river and now i have returned 40 years later and i tried to fish it last fall but other than a couple northerns following my spinner to shore i caught nothing. I tried jerkbaits and square bills rubbing the concrete slabs placed below the south dam while reeling in, then plastic craws because i always caught craws on my worms as a kid. I threw alot of baits out ther but no luck but again this was late fall and where the pike are holed up i dont know as thats what i was wanting to catch. Yes i did get snagged and lost a couple lures. Many serious walleye guys are out in the evening into the dark by the north and south d**n trying for walleyes even last week before the cold spell the water was still open below the damns and a couple guys were fishin and the one guy claims he caught a 13 lb walleye in october. I watched a guy catching golden eye this summer one after the other on a small tiny hook using worms and he had a 5 gallon bucket half full of them and according to the internet they are eatin by many people and taste good. This spring i will try the river for pike after the spawn and maybe have some fun. Between the snags and the muddy looking waters in the summer is why i head out to the detroit lakes becker county area to fish for bass and pike. 32 minutes ago, Deephaven said: I grew up there...any never fished the red. Super User fishwizzard Posted February 15, 2021 Super User Posted February 15, 2021 My closest spots are a 15min drive, there are four of them but they are all tiny and various levels of too-pressured. I live in central MD and while it's a very very developed area, there is a lot of water with bass in it. The issue is that while some of them are "good", none are "great" and most are "meh". But, within about an hours drive I have dozens and dozens of spots ranging from tidal marshes full of bass and snakeheads to deep rocky river valleys where I can wade for (small) smallies. I have an every evolving list of about a dozen spots I focus on every year, so there is enough variety to keep it interesting but not so many that I can't learn them reasonably well. Quote

Park Rapids, Erskine, Northome and Deer River were the 'corners' of my range. 1 Quote

Mostly channel cats, bullheads, goldeye, sheepshead, & suckers. An occasional pike, walleye or sauger....and, once, a smallmouth -- my first. We hadn't known there were any bass in there. I haven't fished it since I left for college, and I've only been back a few times. My wife is from Fergus Falls, and I fished a few times with her family in the Fergus-DL-Alexandria area, but not specifically for bass. I never really fished for bass specifically until years later when I was living in NJ. And then when I moved to MI, I stuck with it. 25 minutes ago, MN Fisher said: I never got that far west - spent 6 years in Bemidji (9th grade -> 2 years of college) and did all my fishing in that general area. Both of my brothers went to college in Bemidji. I was in Park Rapids 2 summers ago for a family reunion, but didn't have time to fish. I go to MN almost every year, but always have family obligations that don't leave any time to fish. One of these days I'm going to get back some of these old places and do it, though. 2 Quote
HookInMouth Posted February 15, 2021 Posted February 15, 2021 About 5 minutes from the Kiski River. Middle Allegheny from Kinzua down to Parker is about 1.5-2 hours depending on where I’m launching. If I’m forced to do a lake Yellow Creek and Lake Arthur are about an hour away. Quote
MGF Posted February 15, 2021 Posted February 15, 2021 I mostly fish the Tippecanoe river and I have a half dozen boat ramps within 15 minutes of my house. I have a pretty decent bass lake about 15 minutes out, several more at 30 to 40 minutes. If I want to drive an hour or more there are more choices than I know what to do with. The problem is that all the close stuff is too easy and rewards me for being too lazy to travel further. There's a lot of good fishing within a two or three house drive. 1 Quote
Fishnski48 Posted February 15, 2021 Posted February 15, 2021 The closest lake is about 30 miles, but if you cast more than 50 feet from April to December you'll likely catch a jet ski or wakeboard with a very unhappy person on-board. This occurs 7 days a week...Ugh Living in the desert we have reservoirs, For numbers its about 55 miles (an hour and 15 minutes) and for size its about a 110 miles ( 2 hours) But I can do it 12 months a year, just need to watch for monsoons and high winds. Summers it is on the water by 5 and off by noon, being retired makes this very possible Tues -Thursday. I'm really jealous of some of you with variety and numbers of spots... but happy wife .. happy life..Yes I wear the pants in the family.... she just tells me when to put them on 2 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted February 15, 2021 Super User Posted February 15, 2021 My two regular lakes are about 10-15 minutes away. One is large and the other is small. Neither are good for catching bass. But none of the other lakes within an hour's drive are any better. There are two more lakes I'll go to a couple of times a year that are about an hour and fifteen minutes away. They're not amazing lakes, but they're both much better than what I have nearby. From there, for every hour I want to add to my drive time, I can reach a lake that's twice as good as the previous ones, up until about 4 hours. However, with the drive back, that's going to take a pretty hefty chunk on the amount of time I can spend on the water. With work and family, six to eight hours is usually all I can find to slip away, if I'm lucky. Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted February 15, 2021 Super User Posted February 15, 2021 15 minutes and I’m at the dam. 2 hours to Truman Quote
Ravox Posted February 15, 2021 Posted February 15, 2021 I live in Florida I just need to cross the street and go to my neighborhood pond probably 1 minute walk But I also like to explore other places with my car, since we are surrounded by water everywhere I don't need to go that far 1 Quote
river-rat Posted February 15, 2021 Posted February 15, 2021 When fishing close to my home in Baton Rouge I'm anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes from the landings I use. The house we have on Six Mile Creek at Toledo Bend is 4 hours away. I've got numerous options once there that are close by including Sam Rayburn which is only 30 minutes from the house. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 15, 2021 Super User Posted February 15, 2021 One hour to Dinwiddie County which is southwest of Richmond and my friend's double secret farm pond. 1 Quote
Buffdaddy54 Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 I live in Columbia Md, and there are 4 "municipal" lakes here. I can walk 300 yards to Lake Elkhorn. Centennial, WildeLake, and Lake Kittamaqundi are all less than 10 min from my house. All are highly pressured and none are what I would call hawg heavens. There are also a slew of ponds nearby. Elkhorn being so close is my main lake, and being a bank fisherman means the Patomac is out for me. Quote
fishbrittonfish Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 I have 2. One that is 7 mins. from my house on bike and one that is an hour and a half. Quote
Fred Allen Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Tomhannock Reservoir is where I go the most. Its 15 minutes away at daybreak and about 30 minutes to 45 minutes in traffic. But being in Albany NY I have almost unlimited places with in an hour drive from my house. If I want to go an hour or 2 on the northway I have my choice of 100s of places more wild to fish. Quote
keagbassr Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 I've got 6 'usual' spots ,4 of which are 2-4 min. away and the other 2 both about 12-15 min. drive. 1 Quote

My dream retirement! About 10 more years! I fish mainly ponds in our neighborhood, all within probably 2 miles from my home. I am lucky, as there is almost zero pressure from other anglers. I try to rotate every couple days to give the ponds a rest. If I wanted to fish a boat, Sutton is on the way home from work about 5 miles. I just tote the boat to work. Also have Shearon-Harris and Jordan lake about 2 hrs. Away. 1 Quote

Trox Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 There's not a lake worth fishing within 2hrs from me... Sucks, because most of my fishing expenses in absorbed by truck gas and vehicle wear, but you do what you gotta do! I rarely travel outside of fishing and I just hit the 100,000mi mark on the odometer and the truck is barely 3yrs old . 1 Quote
chuck-norris-707 Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 My HL (Home Lake) is about a 5 min drive and If I want to bike then it is 14 min ride, just enough time to listen to my tunes and get ready to slay the bass. I dock my boat at my buddies house who lives on the lake Quote
