lunkerboss923 Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 I throw 3/8 to 1/2oz jigs with trailers and 3/8 to 1/4oz Tungsten and Trick Worms or Creature baits. I was thinking maybe 715c Kaden or 705c Champion. I currently have a 734c, but I feel the rod is too long for my style of jig and worm fishing. I would prefer the action be similar to the 734 or even a little more stiff (maybe something like a St Croix Avid X ). I find the 4 powers from Dobyns to be a little lighter than normal. Hence my inquiry about the 5 Power. I used to own a 735c and it was almost a Lite Heavy. If you were me would you buy a 705/715 Dobyns for your jig and worm rod? Quote
waymont Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 705c Champion is exactly what you are describing. Dobyns actions, as you know are on the light side. Even though the 705c is rated as a MagHeavy it's not a broomstick at all. I haven't fished a Kaden, but I do own a 705c, and it would be a good choice. Quote
kayaking_kev Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 If you're not too far from Dobyns HQ in Texas or even a Dobyns retailer, I would take a road trip and handle one for yourself to see how you like the feel. But, from my understanding the shorter the blank gets, the stiffer it becomes, but I could be wrong about that. The only Dobyns rod I personally heard of being stout was the Extreme HP 746c, but that's not the length you're looking for. I would guess the 705c to be a little more stiffer than the 734c though. I've have had a Xtasy 755c & Sierra 735c, but nothing shorter in the 5 power. I used the Xtasy for Jigs in the range you listed, and the Sierra for frogs, but I never threw worms with either. I always used 5" worms and 1/4 oz. weights or less and for trick worms I preferred softer tips. EDIT: Dobyns HQ is over 4 hours away, so that is probably out of the question. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted February 13, 2021 Super User Posted February 13, 2021 Don’t confuse power ratings and blank actions. Dobyns rods are known for “over rating” the power ratings and come slightly under the stated ratings. The actions however are consistent as a fast is a fast and extra fast an extra fast. The sweet spot for almost all Dobyns 5 power models is 1/2 ounce. The Kadens are xtra fast and lock up pretty quick which is for me a positive with large jig hooks. I think the Kadens fish and perform above their price point. For the applications you listed, the 715C would get my vote. Good luck!? Quote
