I was wondering if Bill Norman Fatboy crankbaits are made out of balsa wood. I know if I go to Cabela's website, they only carry the "Professional Edge" fat boy crankbait, and it says it is made out of balsa wood. Are the standard Fatboy crankbaits made out of balsa wood? I'm thinking the only difference between the Professional Edge and regular ones is hardware & paint job.....???

No, but it's my #1 crankbait!  It shines fishing through stumps.

So the regulars are not, but professional edge models are?

I think all Norman’s are plastic these days. Look closely at the lip where it meets the body and you can tell they are all one piece molds (plastic), including the Professional Edge versions. Believe the Cabela’s/BPS writeup is a typo.

No, the pro edge models are just different color option I believe.

It’s Pradco attempting to refresh the branding.  The color schemes look to be all old school to me.  Regardless, it’s still a good bait.  I just upgraded hooks on a bunch of my Normans baits.

somebody got a surprise then. in the "Ask a question" on BPS & Cabelas site, about the professional Edge models, somebody asked if they are balsa wood, and the answer was "yes they are"....???

Well going off their description, looks like that might be the case;

  • Sunshine Gel-Coat finish
  • Plenty of flash and reflection
  • Premium balsa wood

   I called Pradco. They're "checking on it". Possibly a special run for Johnny, possibly not.             jj
