Aaron_H Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Stuck myself in the ankle 40 minutes into fishing this afternoon. Popped the lure free of a hangup and felt the bait slap my leg, didn't even feel the hook penetrate. Definitely a bummer to see it went past the barb. It thankfully didn't get too deep or at a bad angle, so I was able to push the point out the other side and clip it off. Pardon the spots on the pic, camera is a bit fudged.... If anyone wants to know if the Gamakatsu EWG trebles are good: 10/10 penetration with little effort. Will buy again. 6 3 1 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted February 11, 2021 Super User Posted February 11, 2021 Definitely NOT the best way to find out that the Gammy hooks are great! ?? jj 3 Quote
Aaron_H Posted February 11, 2021 Author Posted February 11, 2021 What's that expression again, "you wouldn't know a good treble hook unless it walked up and stuck you in the leg"? 1 1 Quote
Way north bass guy Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 I’d say I feel bad for you, but seeing that your bass fishing in shorts, and I’m feeding my fireplace while it’s -20 outside with 2’ of snow here, I don’t feel bad at all 3 6 Quote
Aaron_H Posted February 12, 2021 Author Posted February 12, 2021 Not to rub salt in that wound, but it was 85 degrees this afternoon.... Don't feel too bad, it was more of an annoyance than anything. Took a few minutes to work the hook out the other end and then had to call it early to disinfect it. Good as new, currently! If the weather holds tomorrow I'll be back out there for some payback. 2 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 12, 2021 Global Moderator Posted February 12, 2021 I had a rattle bait come back at Mach 1 and I just managed to turn right when it hit me in my side just back and below my armpit. Same thing, didn't feel it penetrate but when I tried to pull it out of my shirt, I felt it pulling skin too and I knew I was stuck. First time I ever fished with my buddy at the time and he had to push a hook through and cut it for me. 1 Quote
moguy1973 Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 String trick would have worked pretty easily on that one since you had both hands to do it with. 1 Quote

Good thing your buddy was willing to help out. 6 minutes ago, moguy1973 said: String trick would have worked pretty easily on that one since you had both hands to do it with. I considered it, it definitely would've worked, but it was shallow enough that I just went with what I knew. Once I popped it past the barb it was smooth sailing, very little blood or pain. If the water here was cleaner, I'd have just kept on fishing. Quote

Super User soflabasser Posted February 14, 2021 Super User Posted February 14, 2021 That is good you where able to get the hook out. It happens to most fisherman if they fish long enough. Gamakatsu make excellent hooks that is for sure. 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 This is why I'm strictly barbless with trebles. I've had a few bad experiences with smaller hooks. Interestingly I don't notice a big difference with keeping fish pinned. Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted February 15, 2021 Super User Posted February 15, 2021 Just last weekend, I was loading up my rods into my truck from my buddies boat and ran 1 barb from a treble on a blade bait past the barb on the topside of my thumb just past the base of my nail. I was in a hurry so I just ripped it out the opposite direction it went in. You’d of thought I hit an artery with the way it was bleeding.?. My buddy saw it and pulled a bandage out of his first aid kit. Quote

We flipped a canoe once and a treble stuck in my toe, lure still tied to a rod that’s somewhere in the river. Had to rip it out while bouncing down the rapids (foot still underwater ). I bet if more than one hook had me, I would have been in a bad spot Quote

I bet if more than one hook had me, I would have been in a bad spot Having been a guide for so many years I have been hooked more times than I would care to remember. My pain threshold is pretty high ?. Normally I would do the string trick or cut the barb off but because of where this was located, it was easier to just pull it out. Plus it’s a pain to put new hooks on blade baits. ? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 16, 2021 Super User Posted February 16, 2021 Wouldn't be quicker just to cut your toe off? 2 Quote

Super User Tennessee Boy Posted February 17, 2021 Super User Posted February 17, 2021 I got one in my scalp once and the barb broke off while I was trying to remove it. That one had to be cut out in the ER. Quote
