I just got my new Ultrex 24 volt trolling motor (Cabelas has a great price right now in my area), and I am going over what else I need to get this thing hooked up and ready to fish. I plan on running new wiring. In the instructions it said to run a certain size, for the length to be ran. In my case it is 20' of 6 ga. wire. Here is my concern. The pigtail coming out of the foot pedal is 3' long and if I read it right, only 10 ga. I am thinking that in electricity, when you change wire size like this, you just restricted the efficiency that the heavier ga was delivering. Granted, the wires inside the head are not going to be as substantial as what is coming from the battery, so I know there has to be a reduction somewhere. My question is this, is there any reason to shorten the pigtail, or am I just putting too much thought into this.

As always, the information here is the best and I thank you in advance.

It is not necessary, but you certainly can make it whatever length you would prefer. I cut a few inches off of mine just because I thought it was a little bit long to work right with the TH Marine troll jacket.

Edit* I apologize, I did not run it through the troll jacket, but I did shorten it because it was too long and made the troll jacket not lay correctly. After I typed that I had to re-think it and then I went out and checked it.

The pigtail was rated for your trolling motor. Shortening the pig tail will not make much difference.  The reason to run heavier wire to the batteries is to prevent voltage drop across the longer distance .
