I’m looking at rods and debating on which to buy. I’m not really good when it comes to this but does it really matter on the lure weight on the rod? I got a dobyns boom boom and the lure weight is like 3/4 to 1 ounce I believe but it’s for top water jerk baits and cranks. I use all those besides a coulple chatter baits and spinners. Can I use the other 2 on this rod or should I return to get a medium heavy fast but if I do that the lure weight is like 1/4 to 3/4 ounce.

I believe you meant to say 1/4 - 1 oz. rating, but I think we get it.

Since you already have the rod in your possession, is there anyway you can take it out and try it with chatters & spinners and see how you like it? Some people like to throw those baits on fast action rods and some prefer moderate fast, it comes down to personal preference. I think you can get away with it, but you would have to make your hook sets harder to penetrate the bigger hooks, but once hooked it will help keep them pinned better.

And, if you did want to return it for a fast action, I actually love their 3 (MH) power rods for jerkbaits, topwaters, & squarebills, just keep in mind I wouldn't personally throw a whole lot of 3/4 oz. baits on them.

I've fished with 14 different Dobyns, but never a Boom Boom, but I'm pretty sure they use Champion XP blanks. With most Dobyns casting rods if the top lure rating is 1 oz., it's more like 3/4 oz., if it's 3/4 oz., it more like 1/2 oz. But, that is also me just being safe, I have never actually ran a CSS to objectively measure their power to be certain.

You really don't need to get too crazy with hooksets on bladed jigs and spinnerbaits with a Dobyns 4 power. Your standard solid hookset is plenty fine. Absolutely no reason to swing for the moon. Your post makes it sound like you need their mag heavy just to fish those baits appropriately and that's just not even close to true. Sorry if I'm reading you wrong. The 4 power is basically made for those baits.

I also use their 3 power for the baits you mentioned, and I agree with you on the max weights you'll throw on the 3 and 4 power. It's even more complicated than that. For the 3 power, not all 1/2oz lures are equal. A 1/2oz lipless feels like it slightly overloads the rod but a 1/2oz 90 size Whopper Plopper feels perfect on it.

I think you just read it wrong, because in no way did I say you have to swing for the moon. I'm just saying you would have to swing harder on a moderate fast rod compared to a fast rod.

He is also using a MH cranking rod, usually a 3 power in terms of their regular casting rods, but they number it as a 5 power for their cranking rods, but it does have the same lure rating as a regular 4 power casting rod, so it's a bit confusing. So how does their MH cranking rods compare to their regular MH casting rods? There is no way of knowing without running a CSS.

Yes that’s what I meant. I don’t know why people have to be a** about stuff big whoops it’s a typo. But yes iv tried it and it shakes alittle more vigorously than the kistler argon I had. The dobyns I have now is medium heavy moderate fast bait rating 1/4 OUNCE TO 1 ounce. Now I mostly use top water and shallow crank baits which is what it’s made for but I also use a few spinner baits  and chatter baits as well.  Was just curious if they would work on it as some says it will (affect the presentation of the bait) or should I return it and get like a 7’ 3 heavy fast?

Calm down, nobody meant any disrespect regarding your typo, it happens to all of us. I just wanted to make it clear what you meant to say, because someone might of actually took it at face value. If I was going to be what you said, I wouldn't of tried helping you with your problem.

Have you ever used another Dobyns rod before? I ask because they are softer than most other rods, but I've never used a Kistler Argon so I can't make a comparison.

As far as if it would change the presentation, I don't have enough knowledge on that to say for sure. If your just retrieving it in open water, then my guess would be no, as long as the line stays taunt. If your fishing them around cover, banging them off of rocks, or using stop & go, then it might be more likely, but I can't say if that would be a bad thing either, but that's just my guess.

A 7'3 Heavy Fast will throw the spinners & chatters better, and even some bigger topwaters pretty good, but it will lack at shallow cranks and harder to throw jerkbaits.

If it were me and I had no problem penetrating the hooks with the moderate fast rod with spinners & chatters, then I may just keep it. Maybe save up some money and eventually get both. Or maybe even better, you could get 2 cheaper rods, like a Fury 705cb for your Crankbaits, Topwater, Jerkbaits, and a Sierra 734c for your Spinnerbaits & Chatters + more, as it's a very versatile model. A 20% Dobyns pops up all the time, or buy used since the warranty is transferrable, or check their refurbished section on their website.

I actually have two crankbait rods that I'm going to be selling.

1) = Dobyns Champion XP 704cb Glass = Around $170 shipped

It's a pretty soft rod, but great for shallow cranks and small treble hook baits. I liked it for smallmouth fishing.

2) = Daiwa Tatula 7ft. Medium Power / Regular Action = Around $110 shipped

Designed for Topwaters, Shallow Cranks, Jerkbaits. More power than the rod above. I      liked to use it mostly for Whopper Ploppers size 90.

Both are a little less than a season old, and both are rated 1/4-3/4 oz.

I think if you get a Dobyns you should like and prefer a softer tip. It's the reason I almost exclusively use their rods. There's a little variation in the different lines of rods, but generally they're a little softer than most other brands. I like this. Something between a F and a MF is my preferred and favorite actions and they accomplish this.
