I've had carp and the non-bottom dwellers are fairly tasty...but the same issue I have with pike applies here - lots of LITTLE bones.

I think this is gonna crash-n-burn - and waste money.

I say crash and burn too. I’ve heard it tastes very good. I understand their thinking behind it, because I hear carp and I think the same a lot of people do.

I have always thought Carp needed better PR.  Now they have it.

I keep saying I’m gonna eat the next one that jumps in the boat but when I’m actually looking at one I always change my mind.

Hard pass. I rather eat walleye, or another good tasting fish.

Have you had Asian carp?

People eat carp. I never had but I wouldn't be opposed to trying it. I don't think the name has anything to do with it. People eat crappie. If there was ever a less appetizing name for a fish than this....

They're so disgusting up close. They just look nasty, start bleeding the instant they land in the boat, slime everywhere, they stink, that weird eye and mouth, just not a visually appealing creature at all. They make terrific cut bait for catfish and gar though.

I would think there would be some way they could be used in homeless shelters as a form of cheap protein? They aren't bottom feeders so assume their PCB levels would be much lower.

Unfortunately, if food hasn't gone through an FDA inspected plant, food pantries are not allowed to accept it. Same thing with venison. The logic makes zero sense. Better off people go through life malnourished and starve rather then accept wild game.

There’s a processing plant in Kentucky that freezes them and ships them to China.  They’re in high demand there.   Unfortunately,  our supply is almost unlimited.

I remember hearing something about that. I know some places have "Hunters feeding the hungry", programs, we do here in Kansas. I've donated several deer to them. I've given a lot of Asian carp away at various boat ramps on the Kansas river also. Folks fishing for whatever will bite just looking for a meal are more than happy to take them. It's too bad common sense isn't allowed anymore and every single thing has to be regulated.

I believe they tried something similar with Tilapia once upon a time. Some nonsense thought that St Peter’s Fish sounded like a more appetizing name than Tilapia.

Some fish have unappetizing names and are ugly as well. I would rank Cusk up there with the best of them. When it’s square, breaded, fried, served on a bun with a slice of cheese, tartar sauce and called “filet o fish” I don’t care what it looked like and the name for that sandwich is fine with me.

It does not taste good. The DNR was handing it out fried at the bass master classic in 2019.

create a meat market for Asian carp and that will guarantee we will never be rid of them

I started researching the Asian carp problem in Tennessee a couple of years ago and was surprised what I learned.   The TWRA does not believe they have ever spawned in the Tennessee or Cumberland valley.  They believe all 15 zillion of them locked through Kentucky and Barkley Dam.  If this is true then their strategy for dealing with them seems promising.  They call it block and tackle.  They plan to use underwater noise generators to scare them away from the locks which is supposed to prevent most of them from locking through.  This is the “blocking” part.   Next we just need to “tackle” the problem of the ones already here.  That’s why every person in the state needs to eat about 1000 pounds Asian carp in the next year or so and then the problem will be solved.

They could just close the locks on the river but they won’t do that

That would shut down a lot of coal powered steam plants and a lot of other stuff to.

It just depends on how important you think keeping the carp out is. I bet they can lift coal over a dam onto another barge or put in on a truck

That’s not a bad idea but I agree it won’t happen.

They will just say that they need more money to put more bandaids on the problem for a few decades. They are already receiving $25 million this year and $4 million a year after that to unsuccessfully fix the problem. But they are “underfunded” haha

If people will eat snakehead, I don't see why they won't eat asian carp. Snakeheads sound even worse and are probably just as slimy. I just wish that there was a way to catch them on a rod without snagging. Imagine fighting a 30lb jumping carp.
