When it comes to my lipless cranks, I don't fish the Super Spot nearly as much as I used to. So maybe something has changed that I haven't heard about, and I certainly can't find any info about this bait online.

So I was at Walmart yesterday and decided to take a stroll through their fishing section. which I haven't done in years. I come across Their lipless section and decide to get a few different Super Spots since they were marked so cheap.

When I got home and opened them, I notice one is different compared to all my other Super Spots (it's the bottom bait in the first pic...the gill/perch pattern). It also had a little different packaging from the other ones they had at the store. Also, on the package it doesn't say "Super Spot" anywhere. It also doesn't say "Cordell" or "Super Spot" on the side of the body either like all others.

A few more differences- The body doesn't have a slight indentation like the others do. And Spots always have either a perfect spot/circle on them, or none at all (some craw patterns). This one has a different shaped marking. Also, the gill plate is actually raised up, unlike the other Super Spots. And the eyes are recessed a bit, where as the others are all painted on. And looking from the top, you can see how the nose is flat instead of rounded, like the normal Super Spots.

Anyways, any info on this bait? Just curious what the deal is...

Wow, you're right, it does look like it went thru a bit of a design change.

Spot were great for shallow water presentations, they were a little more buoyant than say a Rattle Trap. I wonder if they changed that attribute?

I’d say we are seeing Pradcos way of selling spots the cheapest possible way without branding and they change enough features to avoid paying royalties somehow? In the end I’d say it is changed to make a few extra pennies. Just a guess

It even has a higher pitch rattle than the others. But I literally can't find this on any site. TW, BPS, Academy etc. I could see them making different colors for different stores like how TW gets specific colors in some baits. But this is a whole different design.

Was it in the clear plastic box or on the bait bonanza paper card?

It was on the paper card like this (not my pic). It didn't say Super Spot anywhere on the packaging either, including the UPC sticker. And I don't think it said Galant (Calant?) Sinking on the bottom. It was just plain.

I was on Lurenet, the company that bought cordell and you're right, they don't have that color profile nor do they have a raised gill. The one thing I did find interesting was the nose, the older one's like you mentioned had a round nose and the new one's have a squared off nose. Would probably fish a little different, maybe more of a hunt like an attribute of a square bill.

Walmart sells a Cordell lipless in a paper card package that is not sold anywhere else (that I have found and I have looked diligently). They also sell Super Spots in the plastic boxes that you can buy anywhere, but there are several colors in the paper cards that are, apparently, Walmart-only. It just so happens that one of those paper card colors is the absolute deal on one of my regular lakes and I buy out the three local Walmarts of that color every year. They have seem to have smaller rattles than a real Super Spot but they weight the same (lighter/shallower than a RatLTrap). Amazingly the hooks are not terrible. Several years ago I posted a thread about my #1 lure for that year and it was one of the paper card Walmart Special Cornell’s. I have about 25 of them right now.

I just find it strange that Walmart would get a specific design. Colors, I can see.

True.  But I wouldn't suspect Walmart of selling a knock-off.  If they were on Amazon it would be a no-brainer.  I can tell you that "back in the day" you could go into Walmart and buy a Remington 870 12ga shotgun in a blister pack hanging on a hook.  These were Walmart-specific shotguns made by Remington and they had slightly different internal parts than other 870s.  Everything was totally interchangable but there were differences in the parts.  I would think it would be more expensive to change the design of the lipless crankbait just for Walmart but who knows.  Maybe leftovers from an old design?  I know the paper packs are getting tougher to find and it's worrying me!  LOL

There are 4 different versions of the super spot. I don't think it's a deliberate thing, just a production run and different factories thing. My older spots from the 80 are better than the newer ones, but they all do ok. Some of the newer ones on heavy line can almost be fished almost suspending, and they have a more subtle wiggle.

The one with the raised gill plate is not super spot.  I think it is a generic lipless that is now sold by Cotton Cordell.

In fact, I think at one time Cabela's sold it (scan from a 2005 catalog, below)

If you satisfy the minimum contract requirements, there are Asian companies that will manufacture merchandise that they have, with your specifications on color and packaging, including language, logo and printing.

As for the Cotton Cordell name, AFAIK Pradco owns it. The can put it on anything they want.     jj

Maybe the factory got the wrong bait in the  wrong package.

Wally World has "Bait Bonanza" cheesed out versions of several popular lures, usually thrown in a box well below eye level. I found $1.67 some good Yum stuff at my local one recently. The CC lipless is labeled Garland (as in Hot Springs). I've also seen Bomber in there. They used to have a tiny Renegade jerkbait that fish really liked. Oh, and I think this is my new favorite Super Spot color....

Im sure that I have several of those as well that I purchased at Academy. If I can recall correctly these were a one time promotional bait and are not the same as originals.  Packaging was different as well. It was more than just spots that were part of the promotion.  I got 3-4 different styles.

I know a buddy and I picked some of the craw ones one year and tore it up one day with them.  We had went back and stocked up and never had much success again with them haha.

Thanks for all the information shared here. I saw the cheapo version of the Super Spot at my local Walmart. I didn't pick any up, but wondered about it. I do use the Super Spot.

That was call The Hot Spot from Cotton Cordell then came the Super Spot. They catch fish. I don't have a original one anymore.
