Classic baits you've never thrown...

Classic bait would be a Hula Popper maybe? I don't own any and haven't owned one for years.

 

Popular bait would be a Fat Ika. I've tried them several times and they rarely got bit for me and the hookup ratio is horrible.

Back in the day, you could not open a fishing magazine without seeing a Helin lure ad.  I bought lots of them in all sizes and colors.  I even bought a Helin Fish Cake top water lure that I still have.  In fifty years of fishing, I have never caught a bass on one of those lures.  Someone else must have as they were very popular in their time.

Poppers are one of those baits where I don’t see how buying a more expensive and fine tuned bait would actually produce more fish, the rebel pop-r just destroyed for me last year.

I've always wanted to try a Dalton Special. I've caught bass on other propbaits, but I've never bought a Dalton.Never caught a fish on one.

The only thing that I can think of that I've NEVER tried is a ned rig or anything that would resemble a ned rig.  The closest I can think of would be a VMC rugby shaky head with a power worm.

 

There's a lot of baits popular baits that I've kept on hand, tied on a few times, but I'd be surprised if I've got more than 10 casts with each of them....

I have a Helin surface lure but didn't know the name. Stubby, cigar shaped with a "buzz" blade on front and the usual hook spreaders/ arms for 4 trebles. Black coachdog color.

Here's my Helin Fish Cake lure.  It doesn't get much simpler than that.

One year I wanted to up my top water game so I dedicated 1 hour of every trip to top waters , no matter what the conditions . I caught more bass on a Dalton Special than all others .

Always thought the same way, probably 90% of the popper fish I have caught have been on the same rapala  xrap pop that I’ve owned for like 5 years. Only other on I throw is a river2sea bubble walker which is halfway between a popper and a walking bait, really undervalued bait.

I'm a pop r guy as well. Not saying its the best popper out there...whatever best means anyway. But throw some better hooks on a pop r and go to town. It just gets bit.

I don't think I've ever caught a fish on a walking bait like a spook. I confess to not fishing it much because I'm not very good at walking it.

 

It's sort of hard to imagine somebody not fishing a soft stick of some brand but you can do an awful lot with other plastics and you could probably get by ok. I've never wacky rigged a plain straight tailed worm like a zoom trick worm or finesse worm.

 

The senko style baits don't seem to be working for me around here like they were a few years ago. This coming season I'm going to try some minor twists and just hook up a different worm.
