crankbait2009 Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 Not sure why I haven't thought of this before, but I have a lot of DVD's that I no longer watch due to not having a dvd player anymore. SUre, I could go buy one, but With me streaming all tv content, I'd like to do it for my movies as well. I have attempted to use the Windows software VLC to do this, but I was denied ripping abilities more than not. I think one movie ripped out of 10. So I stopped, thinking maybe there was a lock or something that denied access to do this. Anyways, I can't be the only one that has wanted to do this. Can anyone recommend a dvd burning software to do this easily? I have seen some software pushing $85, but I'd certainly like to do this without the pretty penny attached, if possible. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted February 7, 2021 Super User Posted February 7, 2021 Handbrake I've used it to rip DVDs to my computer. Still have the DVDs in a box...somewhere...so it's perfectly legal - just like copying LPs to tape in the old days. It's open-source, so it's free. 2 Quote
crankbait2009 Posted February 7, 2021 Author Posted February 7, 2021 that is certainly easy to use. I'm finding a lot of the movies I have are locked to where I can't copy them over. you run into this problem before? Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted February 7, 2021 Super User Posted February 7, 2021 Ya - DRM protection is something that it takes special software to get around...and those programs cost a fair bit of change. It is legal to copy discs for personal use - just don't give copies to friends and definitely don't sell them. It's like the old days when we would copy LPs to tape to take along in the car...legal for personal use. Now it's legal to copy movies you own to put on PCs, Tablets, etc for personal use only...falls under the same rules. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted February 7, 2021 Author Posted February 7, 2021 ya, I get it. That could have been the $85 software that I saw. Quote
