Miabucman Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Had a cormorant dive in and get hooked up while we were trolling off of Key Largo. I didn't realize those birds were so big. Luckily we had a towel and the wrestling match was on! Quote
Super User GaryH Posted February 11, 2021 Super User Posted February 11, 2021 Heck they always say if your good at something stick with it.?? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 11, 2021 Super User Posted February 11, 2021 Geese, very deadly. 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted February 11, 2021 Super User Posted February 11, 2021 I've hooked a bat (a couple of times) throwing topwater bait while night fishing. Bats are bad about that down here, Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 11, 2021 Super User Posted February 11, 2021 I've only ever had them tap braided line at night. Really annoying. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted February 11, 2021 Super User Posted February 11, 2021 I think it wanted to mate with Drew, lol. Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 I’ve caught many birds in the salt. Some from taking the lure or bait others from flying into the line during the blitz. It happens, part of fishing. Quote

It flew for a bit and then came down. It got about 20 feet in the air attached to me and my rod. The racket it was making brought in about 8 screaming friends. pulling a panicked goose to a kayak is almost impossible. I couldn’t do it. I could get it close but the last few feet it would pull away. Thankfully I had friends on kayaks and they could get to the bird. They untangled it, and removed the hook. Bird flew off ticked. I never thought that would happen. Now? Head on a swivel. I’m looking out for approaching waterfowl. So glad I had friends out there. I caught a large great blue heron once. I was fishing a small pond and was casting from a small gap between the trees and bushes. Had no visibility to the sides of me. Right as I threw a cast a full-grown blue heron came swooping down under my line. Line wrapped around the front of his wing and he panicked. I had no assistance and was in an area with tons of people walking the path on the other side of the pond. These people were giving me the dirtiest looks as if I wanted to hook into such a beautiful bird. Every time I would get him within 10 feet of me he would go flying straight up in the air and come crashing back down onto the water. I was panicking as well... Eventually I was able to get him close enough to try to get the hook out. As I had no help this was not a safe idea as they have dagger-like beaks. Without someone to constrain the bird while I got the hooks out I could have gotten an eye taken out. So I got him as close as I could and cut the line. Luckily there was only about a foot of line on him so I believe it was not enough to tangle himself in. Needless to say, all the people who were watching me angrily should have helped. Quote
Alex from GA Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 I've caught gulls, pelicans, a cormorant and an alligator but the biggest thing was a helicopter. I didn't land it. We were @ Catalina Island and heard a helicopter flying very low and, being a smart ass, threw a scampi tail straight up. I must have wrapped around a skid. Looking @ the reel emptying itself very fast hung on to the rod. Bet when he landed and found 200 yds of line trailing from his copter he flew higher. 1 Quote

You gotta stop and think: am I lower on the food chain than a goose?? that’s not nearly as bad as encountering a wasp nest at the top of a 40 foot ladder Quote
Super User Bankc Posted February 15, 2021 Super User Posted February 15, 2021 Had a bunch of gulls darting at my Spook this fall. They kept diving down at it, and veering off at the last moment, realizing that it wasn't real. Eventually one got caught in my line. He squawked really loud and then hit the water. But once he was in the water, he managed to untangle himself and fly off. Oddly enough, it didn't deter any of the other gulls from darting at it. I also caught a crab in Corpus Christi in the middle of my line. He pinched the meat of my hand when I tried to untangle him and wouldn't let go. I had to use my needle nose pliers to get him off. It didn't break my skin, but boy did it hurt! Quote
