FishinThePits Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I was fishing in my buddy's 16 ft tracker when a rediculous wind came up and blew me into a rocky shoreline before I could get the motor started. The boat and motor took quite a pounding on the rocks until I managed to get the trolling motor down and managed to pull away. While inspecting the dents and scrapes I noticed the fin on the lower unit of the 25HP 4 Stroke Merc was not straight. Is this how it's supposed to be or did it possibly get bent on the rocks? Instead of fishing it looks like I'm going to spend my weekend with some touchup paint and a rubber mallet trying to smooth out the dents and scratches. Hopefully I won't have to replace his lower unit too. Thanks for your time, Brad Quote
SkeeterZX225 Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Are you talking about the skeg at the bottom of the engine or the anode (silver piece) above the prop?? Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted July 19, 2009 Super User Posted July 19, 2009 It is bent but can be fixed by a good welding shop. If you try to straighten it without some heat it will probably break. Quote
FishinThePits Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Are you talking about the skeg at the bottom of the engine or the anode (silver piece) above the prop?? The skeg. I didn't know it was called that. BTW: What is the curved silver/gray thing above the prop? It is actually curved the opposite of the skeg. Quote
Ballistik Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 THey are both fine. The piece above the prop is a sacrificial diod that is used to also counter tourque steer. Also with the skeg. The skeg I know because we thought the same thing on my partners 225 optimax but his mechanic says merc does that to help againse tourque steer. SO the Skeg if perfectly fine. Quote
