I Found Something Out

So, this is for the broke guys (like myself) that don't have the money to spend on multiple combos. If you have a catfish specific setup, you can use it for swimbaits to get you by until you have the funds to get a designated swimbait rig. I've been curious as to if I could use my Ugly Stik Catfish rod and Abu Ambassadeur reel for my one and only swimbait. It seems to work pretty well. I'd imagine the action isn't the best for the task, but I didn't catch a fish to verify. I do know that a catfish rod is built to be rugged, so you don't have to worry about snapping one of your smaller rods by throwing too large of a bait. I don't know if anyone will find this information useful, and most people are probably reading this with a dumbfounded look, but hopefully it will help someone out.

Good idea. Use every available resource that you have. I've caught bass on catfish rigs, and catfish on bass rigs. I don't think the fish care what's holding the line. They're just interested on what's on the end of the line.

I figured that, since it's labeled for 1-3 ounces, the swimbait I have would be fine for it. I'll probably take it to the river the next time it warms up and see if I can catch something. I've never gotten a fish on a swimbait, and I've been wanting to get more into them.

I've caught dink bass on big catfish setups, fishing big, stinky bait balls. I've also caught big catfish on light Ned Rig setups with light line. There's a lot of crossover that can be utilized.

 

Speaking of Ned Rigs, I've got a thread about that I've wanted to post.

The Ned rig is probably my favorite presentation to fish. I need to buy more jigheads and Finesse TRD worms, though. I've been out for quite a while.

I’d say if you have the $$$, storage space, etc., it’s great to have a myriad number of rigs set up to fish particular baits and styles to their absolute best potential. But that’s not every angler. So there are a few rigs that can be used to fish different baits and styles and pretty decently.

This is actually the most rods I have had at the same time. I have a Black Max on a Daiwa Air-D X MH that I use for pretty much everything. I have a spinning reel on a small rod for finesse and bream. Lastly is the rod that that I've mentioned that I bought for catfish, but is now a multi-purpose setup. I always end up buying nice gear when I have a job, and then whenever I lose the job, I sell my nice gear off. I always keep a cheap rod and reel, though. That way I always have at least one setup I can fish with.

I now have 6 rigs (3 baitcasting and 3 spinning), which is the most I’ve ever had lol. Two are Black Max’s on Daiwa Aird X’s (MF and MHF). They do the job IMO.

You can't beat that combo in the price range. The Black Max reels are nearly indestructible, and the Air-D X performs like rods in the $80 range.

Yes, I have a ugly stik cat fish rod that I pulled back out of the shed last year and I put my abu c3 on it. This is going to be my pike trolling rig, since I like the big thick long handle in my kayak rod holder. I don't like that handle so much for casting but it does work, for swim baits and for suicks (which weigh 2 oz as well). I don't fish for catfish, but I bought this rod as my bowfin rod a long time ago, and the fishing is the same idea, and bowfin put up a huge fight. I also have a black max as one of my other rigs.

Can't beat it, man. $40 for a do-it-all heavy bait rod is a go for me.

There's nothing wrong with that. I honestly thought I'd catch more flak for using a catfish rod for more than just catfish. Use what you can until you can afford better. If you don't want better, that's a non-issue. There's plenty of times that I've been outfished by an old timer with a cane pole.
