Turtles_R_us Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I have an SLX DC that needs a rod and I have looked at both the Bass X and Mojo Bass. I am willing to pay the price difference for the Mojo bass, but would like to know more about the differences. Also I have doubts about the Mojo Bass because the color won't look as good with the SLX. That obviously is not going to be a decision maker, but is the slightly better rod really worth a less nice looking combo? Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted February 3, 2021 Super User Posted February 3, 2021 Ā Ā Welcome to Bass Resource. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā jj Ā Ā Ā 1 1 Quote
Finessegenics Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I would not call the mojo bass only "slightly better" than the Bass X.Ā I did not use my bass x much as I purchased it very late last season. However, my immediate reaction was how "dead" the rod felt compared to my mojos. It bothered me enough that after spending a few hours withĀ the 7'4 H/F Bass X, a few days agoĀ I actually went out and picked up the same model in the Mojo. Bought both of them used, and I should be able to sell the Bass X at the price I paid for it.Ā Ā I don't mean that as a diss to the Bass X though. I just really felt the difference after "downgrading". The Bass X is still one of, if not, the best $100 rods out there.Ā Ā Ā The mojosĀ are also made with scIII material which is supposed to be of a higher quality than the scII which the Bass X are made of. Ā Also, welcome to bassresource!Ā 1 Quote
Deephaven Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Mojo is the entry line IMO for St Croix for any bottom contact technique.Ā Well worth the price of admission.Ā That all being said, if you are worried how your rod looks more than it performs I am seriously confused.Ā I'll fish a hot pink stick if it is the best thing since sliced bread. 3 Quote
Scud_Muffin Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 SC3 is noticeably way better than sc2.Ā 2 Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted February 3, 2021 Super User Posted February 3, 2021 I'm with @Deephaven. Ā I'll admit that I'm a NeanderthalĀ who's fortunate to have a wife with taste to pick out my clothes, so I don't give a flying hockey puck about how a reel looks on a rod. That doesn't mean that a well coordinated and snappy combo escapes my attention. I get it, but I wouldn't sacrifice what I find to be an optimal match, or upgrade,Ā because of it. Ā What type of baits will you be throwing with this combo?Ā Anything specific?Ā Sensitivity isn't the end all be all with certain baits, but with others it is. 1 Quote

DomQ Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Why not get the slx rod to pair the reel with? Ā My votes for the mojo, its a d**n good rod for the price and strong like bull!!! 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted February 3, 2021 Super User Posted February 3, 2021 Being an owner of both the MojoāsĀ and Bass Xās in spinning rods, I would have to disagree and tilt the scale a bit toward the Bass X. I would never tell you which to buy. This is just my opinion. This is just how the setup feels to me. Iām using identical reels on them and same rods just of a different series.Ā Ā The way things might feel to me are gonna be different for you. But in my opinion the quality is equally as good. SC putsĀ out a good product.Ā 1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted February 3, 2021 Super User Posted February 3, 2021 I have zero experience with the Mojo, but just picked up my first Bass X. My other rods are two Daiwa Aird X's and a Procyon, and two Fenwick HMX's. All good rods IMO, but the Bass X's sensitivity is a good bit better than those. I really like the rod. Maybe I might like the Mojo better, but I cannot complain about the Bass X, from fit to finish to sensitivity to balance. It's a really nice rod for the $$$.Ā 2 Quote

Lol yall are right I don't really care that much but at first I didn't realize how big of an upgrade it was. To be honest I'm not really sure about what I wanna use it for I have a 7' MH Fast action lews Mach crush as well as a 6'6" MH Fast lews american hero, so with already having 2 MHs im reluctant to get another. Any thoughts on what I should get? I fish small clear ponds and usually fish texas rigs, chatterbaits, crankbaits and such. I was thinking maybe like a 6'10" medium in either moderate or fast, but I know treble hook baits are less important for sensitivity. Quote
Emiliano Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I use the Mojo SCIIIĀ 6'8"Ā M power XF tip for jerkbaits and I love it. Good rod for the money I'm really impressed. IĀ reallyĀ don't care about the colourĀ unless it's like a Star Wars lightsaber.Ā 1 Quote

Who cares what the colors are. But I can see that a person(s) would make that an important point. It might be important enough that a guy wouldnāt use it if it didnāt look good to the eye. I would sacrifice looks for quality, fit, sensitivity, construction, warranty. You will have more in the long run. I would not worry about the color match.Ā 1 Quote

The Bass X is a good rod, but the SCIII blank that the Mojos use is higher quality.Ā The SC III gives you a crisper action at a lighter weight which makes the Mojos more sensitive then the Bass X.Ā Both are good rods, but the Mojo is more then worth the extra 20 or 30$. 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I was handling Mojos and Bass X's at Cabelas the other day and they both feel tip heavy to me. SLX rods are feather lightĀ and priced right. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted February 3, 2021 Super User Posted February 3, 2021 Another item to consider when comparing these two is the warranty. I believe the mojo series comes with a 5 year warranty. I am not sure about the bass x line. Ā Iāve got both a mojo and bass x. I prefer the mojo. Quote
00bullitt Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I have used and sold the Mojo Bass rods and now own 3Ā of the Bass-X rods (6'8" Med xFast, 7'1" Medium Fast and 7'2" Med Moderate. Both the Mojo and Bass-XĀ are designed by St. Croix and assembled in Mexico. I am unsure if the blanks originate in the U.S. or not. The Bass-X is SCII graphite and the Mojo is SCIII. I can tell ZERO difference between the two for bottom contact use. I LOVE the BASS-X for reaction baits. I have 2Ā I use for Crankbaits and 1 I use for Jerkbaits. The actions are great for that purpose, for me. The rods are light enough for my liking and I like the overall feel and length of rod below the reel seat. St. Croix's 6'8" Med xFast is an amazing Jerkbait rod that doubles duty for walking top water baits. Ā I'm a fan of the Bass-X and look for better sensitivity for my bottom contact stuff. The Shimano SLX rod is a perfect equivalent to the Bass-X and matches the SLX reel to a T. Their Curado feels much better and then their Zodias is a huge step up to me. Its not a Poison Adrena, but for $200, it is AMAZING!!! I have never used an Expride. But have fiveĀ of the Zodias rods and a Poison Adrena and use them all often. Also have a largeĀ assortment of G. Loomis stuff and am shifting to liking the Shimano stuff for bottom contact more. Ā Ā 1 Quote

There's no more lifetime warranty that I'm aware of. 15 year transfersble warranties seam to be the new norm, or atleast that's what my Xtreme came with. Ā Everything said, SC is coming out with an SCIII+ rod very shortly,Ā it's price is supposed to fall in close with the Avid line, and better balancing. It's supposed to be a composition of the Legend Xtreme Blank and the Mojo/Avid blank. New info on it drops again today.Ā Ā As far as the SLX rod. I got mine for $20 when I bought my first SLX. So you can find them with combo sales. However, for some strange reason, it bothers me when a manufacturer will let a rod sell 70-80% cheaper than its normal selling point. It's performance for me has been okay. I would rather have another Bass X over it. 1 Quote
