I keep an ugly stick for that very purpose. Can’t break those things. The old ones didn’t even have guide inserts

I have “broken” 3 rods

1 broke from a tree falcon low rider

2 rod guide insert fell out. KLX, and Dobyns champ.

Depends on the "friend".  A friend would be someone I know.  At least know enough to know if they are responsible and respectful of other people's property.  To those group of people I will generally lend anything except for certain services from the wife.

As for the irresponsible idiots, I won't even lend my second hand toilet paper.   Again, if they are my "friends" I will know what they are like.

Having said that accidents do happen in which case I simply brush it off.  Only had it happen once and my friend offered to pay for replacement but I declined as accident happens.

When I was a much younger pup I did break a cheap Kmart rod a friend lent me when he took me out to experience fishing.  I broke the cheap rod from casting.  I felt terrible.  He didn't care.  Not knowing what to buy, I went and got a store gift card for twice the value of the rod from a proper fishing store.  We've still remain friends 30 years later and how he's borrowing my expensive rods and reels.

The test of a friendship is not when things are good but it is when things are bad.  How we react and treat each other determines, for me, wither that friendship is worth further investing in or looking for greener pasture elsewhere.

None.  I may have had an eye stepped on, but ultimately, it is my equipment and my responsibility.

One year, My wife and I joined her family on a vacation in the Adirondacks. One afternoon 4 of us guys decided we would check out a lake a few miles away, her Dad drove his big Chrysler and we had all our gear in the trunk. After fishing for a while, we decided to move to another spot. We all put our rods, assembled and rigged, in the trunk hanging out and though we'd just tie down the lid. The lid was down, Dad starts to move the car and the lid comes up. He decides to "pull up" to a spot so we can fix the lid. He steps on the gas a bit and the lid comes down, hard. Like a guillotine, it chopps ALL of our rods off about 2/3 of the way up. Just chopped them right off. He felt terrible and offered to buy us all new rods but I happened to have a wall full of rods I was wanting to find new homes for anyway. I was able to talk him "down from the ledge" so to speak. I was happy to give my father in law and 2 Bro in law another rod. I convinced them they were doing me a favor too! I'll never forget that one!

I have a friend that's broken two and lost one. I only give him my older stuff that I want/need to replace and he generally doesnt disappoint.

Just one.  It was stepped on. It was an easy fix but I was not in a good mood when it happened and it just made a rough day on the water tougher.

A good lesson for both of us though.  A cool head and a clear mind make for better fishing.
