Super User Darth-Baiter Posted February 1, 2021 Super User Posted February 1, 2021 I modified an inexpensive Frabil to suit my needs. I might build another one since I found a really cool fiberglass pole. it floats and I sealed it aggressively to keep water out of the crevasses. No invasive stowaways. It tucks neatly in the bow of my Hobie. I have a trampoline style net up there. what your net kayak fisher-folks? In the process 1 Quote

wasabi_VA Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 This one has workied great for me. Love the rubberized netting which doesn't tangle up https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DHR154C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted February 2, 2021 Super User Posted February 2, 2021 I have an inflatable, not a yak. I use this one which is nice as the handle folds out of the way. You may need more reach with a yak, though. Quote
Dens228 Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 I have an Ego net. I can't remember exactly which one. I prefer rubber coated with the large mesh. This one has it. I also have the YakAttack Leverage but it's more in the way when not in use. Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted February 2, 2021 Super User Posted February 2, 2021 I carry fish grips but never use them. I always just slide my hand under the fish's belly and roll him into the boat. Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 I bought the Yak Attack Leverage on sale after a couple of nice largemouth got off near the kayak. It's got rubberized, relatively small mesh openings on the net itself, and is pretty easy for me to operate with either hand from the kayak. Unfolded it's pretty huge, and on my pedal drive it was hard to come up with a place it was handy, but out of the way when I needed it. The best I could come up with was a rod holder on my left side, but that wasn't out of the way enoight for me to keep carrying it. It really does make landing a fish much easier after you get the hang of it - a lot more than I imagined. And you don't have to work so hard to avoid the snakehead's (or whatever toothy fish you're catching) mouth. But then I remembered that I'm not keeping any of these fish anyway, at most I want a picture every now and again. Then I just stopped carrying it. I might carry it for the shad run this year so I don't mess up their mouths. Btw, it doesn't float, I use a piece of a pool noodle around the handle, which means it doesn't fold so well, even making it less.compact. 1 Quote
michaelb Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 I have this one from Danco. It floats, which is nice because I can work on and release the fish floating on the water (in theory) and it can clip to my anchor line if needed. the short handle (not expandable) works for a kayak because I can easily reach into the water sitting. This net does not have a 30" opening, more like 20", and the whole net including the handle is under 30 total. https://www.dancopliers.com/ORANGE-FLOATING-NET?page=1 I don't need or use a net with bass for the most part. I bought this for pike. I don't know if the rubber is better on any of the other nets, but at least for me, I struggle to get trebles untangled from any net including this one. So I caught a nice size pike (say 30"+ ) trolling a super shad rap; I got the fish out and released it, but it took another 20 minutes of careful surgery to free the hooks that had been twisted and tied and wrapped endless times in the net. I really should get a musky sized net, but can't or won't really carry that on my kayak, so that is a further problem. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted February 2, 2021 Super User Posted February 2, 2021 I use the cheapest net you can find. The Five Finger Discount net. I never leave home without it. It's made from the five fingers on my left hand. Since I'm sitting almost level with the water, it's not hard to reach over and either lip them or slide my hand under their belly. I also like how it folds up neatly and doesn't get in the way when I'm not using it. Plus, it's easy to grab when you need it, because I always have it on hand. 1 2 Quote

Is your netting is rubber coated nylon? Mine is and the hooks go right through it making it tough to get out. I cut the handle foam off and attached a longer handle, about 20” I think just for a little more reach Quote

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted February 2, 2021 Author Super User Posted February 2, 2021 All nets should be rubber. Mine is. Bare minimum, it has to be easier on the fish’s protective slime coat. next benny is that hooks don’t jam up badly. Quote
