mtb.mike Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 Before purchasing a Lews reel I always check what Bass Pro offers in their lineup. Bass Pro and Lews are both Doyo reels. You can get a Johnny Morris Signature Series (JSG30HA) for $160. They have the larger 30 size (same as 300, not sure why brands have to be special) which is made for heavy duty applications. Looks like the Pro TI and Johnny Morris are based on the Doyo Super Duty. Some people skip over Bass Pro but in my opinion you often get the same Lews real for a better price. 1 Quote
CFDoc Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 All of the BPS JM reels are still using Doyo’s old combined centrifugal/magnetic braking system that requires removal of the side plate to adjust the centrifugal settings. I much prefer the 6 pin, externally adjustable system. That’s what’s in the Lews slp models. Much closer to like a Daiwa system where min to max settings can be achieved with one dial. 2 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted February 1, 2021 Super User Posted February 1, 2021 They may be built by the same company but that doesn't make them the same reel. Lews may specify certain parts / designs while BPS specs something else. The braking system is just the most obvious. Quote
Sir Shamsalot Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 For this price range, I would have recommended the older SV TWS that you can found between $150 and $199. Swap out the handle for a 100mm one. You get a higher tested drag poundage, a reel weight close to 7oz, and brakes you don't have to remove the side plate to adjust. 1 Quote
