Looking for info/advice on a new tackle bag and maybe utility boxes.  I am currently using a BP 3600 tackle bag (stuffed to the gills)  with 3 3600 utility boxes and a too small box to hold my hooks.  Just bought the Plano Edge jig box which is a 3700 size box.  I need a bigger bag but it is very hard to gauge the size of all the different bags and what they will hold just looking online.  Also, not sure if it'd be better to go the Flameau route.  Ideally I'd like to find some utility boxes that are in between the 3600s and 3700s along with a bag that could hold accordingly with plenty of good sized pockets to hold swimbaits and other soft baits.

I was looking at the Shimano Borona which is 18.75x10.75x10.5 and is said to hold 3 3700s.  This seems like the perfect bag for fishing as a co-angle in bass tournaments.  Plus it has space on top and the side pockets along with a Molle type system for attaching stuff as well.  However, that thing is $139.  Love to find something like that but cheaper as I figure a lot of that is paying for the name Shimano on the side.  Love my Shimano reels but they aren't paying me so I don't feel the need to openly advertise for them at an exorbitant price tag.

Anyhow, any experience and recommendations appreciated.  I guess I am basically looking for something that could hold 3700 boxes but isn't so big that any fishing partner/boat owner won't look at me and giggle for bringing along a suitcase to fish with.  Btw, yes, I do know in those circumstances I could chat with the boater to see what kind of fishing he plans to do the day before and reduce my tackle need accordingly.  I also have my own boat so I need something to fit both needs.

Thanks!

I have two 3700 size bags...though they might be a little big for you

BPS Extreme Qualifier - holds 5-3700 size in the main compartment, 1-3600 in the front pocket

Plano Z-Series - holds 4-3700 size in the main compartment.

I like these because they hold the boxes long-edge up and can slip under the center seat of my canoe. Using thin boxes increases the number.

Thanks...yea I have a very old BPS 3700 bag.  I'd love to find something (along with boxes) in between that and the 3600 size bag.  I could bungee my jig box on top if it wouldn't fit.

What are you going to use the bag for?   Not a trick question.   Tournament co-angling?  Just everyday fishing out of other guys boats?  Bag for your own boat?   Bank fishing?

If the 3600 bag is stuffed - the easiest/cheapest approach is to re-evaluate what you carry and leave some stuff at home.  If you're bank fishing - a back pack might be a better option.

A back pack isn't a bad option is you're fishing co-angler.  It is generally good to only make one trip from truck to boat.   Since I don't know your situation, let me relate how I've used different bags over the years.

I have an 18 'Lowe, that has much less storage than you might expect, non of it lockable.   I have a Cabelas Magnum bag that holds a dozen different 3700 size boxes.   Basically this is my traveling crank bait collection.    Lipless cranks - shallow/medium/deep divers, etc.  I don't keep this stuff in the boat because non of the storage is lockable - so I keep it locked up in my fishing truck.   My reasoning ( confirmed by my insurance agent ) if stuff gets stolen out of my boat - no coverage.    If stuff gets stolen out of my fishing truck - full coverage.  If this bag isn't in the boat or fishing truck it Is in its own storage bin in my fishing shed.

I have numerous smaller bags, that hold between 3 and 7 3700 size boxes.  I use these bags for the various kits that I might need from time to time.   One bag is for Neko rig stuff.   Obviously I don't have 3 3700 boxes of Neko rig terminal tackle - just have one.   The rest of the bag has baits and other stuff I might need when Neko fishing.  (Own a good, wind proof butane lighter.   Insert weights insert better into elaztech baits if they are heated pretty good prior to trying to insert them).   I have another bag for Biffle Bug fishing.  Hooks/weights  & rigs fit into a 3600 & 3700 box.  The rest of the room is different baits appropriate for Biffle Bug fishing.    Along these same lines I have a bag for Jika Rig gear ( jika rig bag has 3 small boxes of home made jika rigs, rest of the bag is filled with baits that I like for jika rigs, i.e. brush hogs, larger craws, magnum trick worm, various lizards)  a different bag for Ned Rig Stuff.  There is a jig bag.   This holds trailers & pork, also jig boxes.   Jig bag holds 5 or 6 3700 boxes.   I use 3600 boxes because I like being able to find stuff in the bag without unloading it each time.   Jig boxes get swapped out depending on where I'm fishing.   Might be 3/4 ounce skirted football jigs, might be just a box of football heads, maybe finesse jigs,

maybe 7/16 oz finesses jigs, maybe light shakey heads, maybe heavier shakey heads.  Never know until I  decide.

Check out Harbor Freight - occasionally their 15" canvas tool bags go on sale for $5 more or less.  This lets me keep a strong assortment of baits  - kinda sorted by type - more or less protected from the elements.   I keep a bag for senkos & another for stick baits that I'm going to tx rig - a bag for bubba drop shot baits, a different one for 10" worms.   7" ribbon tail worms get their own bag and so do tubes & soft plastic minnow imitators ( flukes & such ).   Still not through, Chompers get their own bag, paddle tail worms & smaller soft plastic swim baits (Those less then 5" long).   These Harbor freight bags will hold 15 to 20 bags of soft plastic easily, 30 if you stuff them in.  Believe it or don't, but these bags don't even start to hold all the soft plastics I've collected over the years.   All of the overflow is sorted into plastic shoe boxes, sorted by brand - size - etc.  All of the canvas bags fit into an oversize beach bag that I came across on sale at Academy.

I'm pretty paranoid about stuff getting robbed, (even though it has only happened once )  so each bag is labeled both by what is in the bag and with my name & address.  Name - address - phone number are also concealed inside the bags in different places, just in case they do get stolen, marked up, but the crooks don't check every nook & cranny.

When I was fishing as a co-angler in tournaments, I had a different system.   Mostly fished Ozark lakes, which while each one has its own personality, they each fish similar, given the season.   So I had a spring bag, a summer bag and a fall bag.  Of course, there was some overlap and I was ok with that.   I considered putting together separate bags together for each lake for each season, but never got around to it as my wallet didn't allow for that at that time.

Hope these tackle sorting suggestions help.  A general rule that has helped quite a bit for me, is that in general it is better to have a larger bag half or 3/4 fun than it is to have a smaller bag stuffed to the gills.   If you've had issues remembering what is in which bag - believe me, I've been there.  For me - labeling is key.   Colored duct tape & permanent ink sharpie markers work good and if you want to change the contents, just rip off the tape & re-label.

Do this a few times and your bags will start to look ratty looking, but I'm ok with that.   The only thing I'm not ok with is zippers that don't work.  Bags with bad zippers are more trouble than they are worth - pitch them and eat the losses.  I haven't found a tailor yet who will fool with replacing zippers on tackle bags yet.

There is also a top load model that carries three 3700s but I find the front load to be much more practical. I have the older model but from what I can tell the layout is exactly the same. It's  probably the best investment I've made so far.

Also give the thread I've attached below a read. Lots of good suggestions and I gave an in depth review of my blackmoon as well as how I set it up.

I have two options for that.  The older Cabelas version of this:

https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-advanced-anglers-ii-magnum-tackle-system

And the plain 3700 box holder:

https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-utility-box-carrier-100030964-1

Personally anything other than something that holds lots of 3700's is awkward and unwieldy especially as your tackle grows.  All the extra side pockets make it bulky.  Personally I'd just go with the el cheapo holder.

As a co-angler in someone's boat I think a backpack is the worst option.  Easy access to trays is the ticket.

I used to bring a bag that held six 3700 boxes, then I stuffed everything in a waterproof BPS boat bag.  No boater ever blinked an eye  or made a comment.  As a boater, I didn't care what you brought as long as you kept it in your area, and were ready to go in five minutes when I said we were going to move.

Sunds like this would be a good option for you from Plano:

Thanks...I looked at the Advanced Angler bag at BPS.  They had a 3650 bag that looked like it would work.

I have 3 things in mind:

1)  Solving the issue of "where did I put that" without having to go through everything to find terminal tackle.  Currently I am storing swimbait hooks and jigs with my swimbaits, tube jigs and hooks with my tubes, and worm hooks and weights with my worms and craws, and a separate small box with just hooks which is a pain because it is stuffed.

2)  I fish as a co-angler either in tournaments or just with friends on their boats a lot.

3)  I want to have everything I need (assuming I'd swap things out seasonally) in one bag with easy access and good organization so I don't have to dig around looking for stuff.

The 3600 bag works for my boxes but just isn't enough room for all my soft plastics...I need something with big pockets to hold those as I have a hard time culling plastics.

Thanks...I looked at that.  I'd like to find something with more pockets.  I think the Shimano Borland bag was the best except for it being $139.95!!!!  Why is it that my best solutions are always the most expensive???

I thought this as well, but less pockets = less searching for that thing you know should be in that pocket.  It NEVER is there. I totally eliminated the problem by using a boat bag that had zero pockets.  Trust, opening and closing zippers on a moving boat during a tournament is not fun.

Excellent point!  I have been looking at boat bags and waterproof duffel bags.  I like them because they flatten down nice and low.

Pockets are awful, trays ftw.  As for plastics, if you get a double height 3700 without dividers and keep bags of plastics in it you'd be amazed how many you can carry.  I have been without a boat for nearly 10 years and use the two solutions I showed above.  I MUCH prefer the plain tackle tray to the bag.

How many soft plastics bags can you keep in those double height 3700s?  One of the good things with those is it seems like it’d be easier and faster to sort through and find what you want without having to pull every little bag out of your pockets.

Depends.  From 10-30.  Clamshells hardly any, but lots of senko bags.  I had 40 bags in 2 of them when I was boatless.

I was going to go with the Shimano bag, I came across the Flambeau IKE Ritual 50 and decided to give it a shot at 65 bucks.. I ditched the boxes that came with it... this is what fits .

Academy terminal tackle 3700

Plano Edge Flex 3700

Plano Edge 3700

Plano Edge 3700 slim

2 Plano Edge 3600 in each side

compartment.

Zman plastics binder.
The Edge Flex is thick.. in place of that could be another standard 3700 and a another 3700 thin.

Still has room for spool of leader line and my tools , gloves, mask, scale.

I am replacing the academy box with the Plano Edge Terminal Tackle which is a 3700 thin.. that will make a tick more room as well

the advanced angler bags for me are hard to beat. if you get the large i believe it will hold 10 3700 boxes. of course you dont have to put 10 in there. you can pu 6 and a worm binder etc.I would store all my terminal together, the plano edge terminal is great but expensive. the academy terminal is vey good but much cheaper.also the 2 pockets on the front of the advanced angler bag holds1 3600 in each . you could dedicate those to terminal. that thing with the huge pocket on the back holds a ton of stuff. as far as flambeau their bags may be good I dont know never owned one but i dont care for boxes, the latches tend to fall off  and they seem to warp easily. just my opinion.

What I really like large pockets for are storing the clamshell swimbaits packs, and other baits that come in clamshells.  How are you (or anyone else) storing those?

I also went with the Blackmon and LOVE IT.  Hands free down to the lake while jumping on their boat.  Able to carry rods in one hand and do anything else with the other is very nice!
